eisberg77: They were never sued, they never used any pirated version, it was all a lie invented by some random person on that Russian forum

From VMSoft themselves shortly after the rumor started

"VMProtect and DENUVO GmbH
June 6th, 2017 :: 0 comments
Hi there!

We were informed that there are open questions and some uncertainty about the use of our software by DENUVO GmbH.
Referring to this circumstance we want to clarify that DENUVO GmbH had the right to use our software in the past and has the right to use it currently as well as in the future.
In summary, no open issues exist between DENUVO GmbH and VMProtect Software for which reason you may ignore any other divergent information."

Lukaszmik: And yet VMSoft refused to provide VMProtect to Denuvo for a while after (not sure how it stands now).

I heard this confirmed as "quickly settled behind the scenes" from somebody working for one of the entities involved in a high enough position, but of course that's no evidence even if you could trust a random stranger posting on the internet.

You might consider the implications of absence of VMProtect in Denuvo versions around that time, though.
Denuvo is a modified VM Protect, and I find no evidence of Denuvo not being based on VMprotect in any of its versions.
What ever happened to ol' Johnathanamz anyway? He was really entertaining.

I've noticed a trend in the last couple weeks of people calming down.

I would imagine it has a lot to do with certain people and certain threads being removed, though I'll likely get a lot of shit for saying that.

One thing is for sure though, it's been noticeably less contentious lately and Johnathanamz is just another example of it.

I am still here.

I just got bored of posting all of these topics about what I am against in being in video games sold on gog.com and just speak with my wallet and purchase what video games are 100% Digital Rights Management (DRM) free and so on.

I either probably come to talk on the gog.com forums once a month now or whenever something big I guess happens, like when 2K and Take-Two released the PC version of Mafia III for sale on gog.com.

That's not correct.

Denuvo, as far as I am aware, is its own thing. However, most of its versions protect that implementation by running it through VMProtect. Around the time the whole "Denuvo using pirated VMProtect" happened, the subsequent versions of Denuvo did not use VMProtect. Which was why suddenly Denuvo stopped preventing pirated versions of the games ladden with it for at least a week or so.

Then people figured out enough of its implementation to crack it similarly fast, VMProtect or not. Do remember, however, the whole "piracy will be killed by Denuvo" claims. It used to be pretty effective - just not around the time frame under consideration.
