You could provide an archived source code as a game extra.

GOG really needs some type of Workshop equivalent honestly.
The workshop equivalent may lead to similar dramas eg when a mod is uploaded without the knowledge and approval of the actual modders by someone else.
We already have to many password walled mod sites. Adding one more, only makes a larger mess. Let us just stick to helping by providing directions to a destination.

Or by making those websites more freely open to downloading to guests.

While I agree with you. I am certain requiring users to jump through hoops will only get worse.

Tell that to Chucklefish, who already make it impractical by locking mod downloads down so you can't download them via SteamCmd or their website.

But it's not gone! ;)

There are a couple more initially-included mods that GOG removed early on after the creators asked them to (and one more -- Travel Options -- which either was added later or, more likely, GOG and/or the YouTuber they worked with initially had forgotten to credit).
The two formerly included mods:
Unofficial Block Location and Model fixes by XJDHDR
Rest Warning If Unwell by Kirk O

(old version of the page used for reference)
I for one I'm glad I grabbed this before it got delisted. There's some easy of mind to have a pre-packeged version even if outdated.

An outdated pre-release version with bloat, mod conflicts, and crashes. Built on a foundation of failed credit and failed permission.

dnovraD: Thank goodness this mistake was resolved.

Next time, ask the modders. Even though the code is free, it is still subject to licences as much as commercial software is.
avatar
Syphon72: Never seem the big deal of this. Not like GOG was stealing and claiming they created the mods. If GOG was selling it that would be an issue.

Most mods don't have any licences or copyright protection. But do agree they should of asked to be courteous.
It does indeed take money out of my pocket while providing the most outdated version of my mods for people to unfortunately play.

And just for the sake of documentation, more modders wanted their mods removed but were promptly ignored.

I'm confused about how this is costing you money. The mod was free and clearly an outdated version. That doesn't add up. Are you suggesting that you're losing donations because of GOG, or are you referring to the resources you invested in creating the mod? It's not like you wasting resources keeping the GOG version update.

Regarding losing downloads from the Nexus Mods site that could earn points: Is there concrete evidence that this affects modders' download counts? Personally, I don't use the GOG cut. Who's to say that those downloading the GOG version would even choose to download your mod if the GOG cut were not available?

From my understanding a lot of modders make most their money with patreon services.

I never actually downloaded a mod for the Unity version.

Time4Tea: It seems like a pretty poor idea to release a pre-packaged build of a free mod project in the first place, if GOG had no intention of maintaining it and keeping it up to date.

I could have told GOG management that ahead of time, and saved them some trouble (not to mention embarrassment) ...
It was a dumb decision. They should have just released the Unity version and focused on keeping it updated on here. GOG could have made a list of recommended mods.

king_kunat: Hey everyone!

We’ll be removing Daggerfall Unity - GOG Cut from our store on February 12th at 2 PM UTC.

We’ve made this decision because, at this time, the pack is outdated and no longer fulfills its purpose of providing a hassle-free modded experience to the game.

Rest assured, anyone who already has it in their library will, of course, keep it.

We’re also working on a solution that will allow us to publish and maintain such projects better in the future, so stay tuned!
Your pack never provided a hassle free modded version of the game. It was always full of conflicting mods and setup in a way that made it nearly impossible to edit.

They literally ALL have copyright protection unless it is explicitly waived. You have an implied copyright on any work you create, unless it is waived explicitly through the written license or you've signed a contract that makes it someone else's, like a work for hire for example.
