onarliog: Meanwhile, finally an excellent
and DRM-free shmup appears. Not Degica, not GOG, but since all interested parties are in this thread already...

It is based on a freeware game called just Mecha Ritz, which was excellent and complete on its own, and nobody was expecting a new version.
Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo is a big update, it's a whole new game with new branching stages and such. There is a couple of Youtube videos of the new game, but I don't want to watch them and spoil the joy of the first blind play. Here is a video of the free version. The art style and music is peculiar, but crafted beautifully nonetheless. The stages are characterized by tons of interesting mid-boss fights, and in general action never stops. Controls are as tight as it gets.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdY-zdM34IA You'll see a "rank" at the bottom, which changes dynamically based on your gameplay and adjusts the difficulty. Jaimers is a very experienced player, starts the game with a high rank, and drives it even higher. So the video demonstrates very high level play, everything is super fast. Lower ranks should be doable for less experienced players.
Btw. Here's the download link for the freeware game:
http://www.freem.ne.jp/dl/win/8513 Give it a try, it's always been a big hit over at the shmups forum.
Btw2. I wrote a simple binary hack to set rank freely, and lock it to a given value/range. It is meant as a practice tool to play high ranks, because when you get hit rank drops, and the practice run becomes meaningless until you increase it again. So I lock it to a range slightly above my comfort zone. Let me know if anybody wants to try it out, and I'll upload it somewhere.
