Hi All - I am new to this forum but I am a loyal GOG member.


My game playing is 99% Adventure Games and I am always looking for new games. I am also a member of the GameBoomers community and it's mostly that site where I get information, reviews, and discussions on games.

I have a list of games I am looking for but GOG does not offer them ! I will NOT use Steam for anything - I will not install their client on any PC and I object to having to have them to play a game.

Black Sails is one I am looking to get through GOG but it is not offered and, as I understand it, GOG does not want to carry it.

I would like to know why games like this are not carried here.

GOG is not STEAM. obviously... if you want everything on your plate. go complain to STEAM greenlight and the dev. and most indie adventure games allow you to buy direct from the dev?

Because GOG thinks they won't sell. Or because they don't meet their standards. Or because the wind was blowing in a certain direction on that particular day. The inner workings here are shrouded in mystery and seem to be more or less caprice-based to outside observers. Personally, I suspect the games that show up here are based on drunken games of pin the tail on the donkey rather than a consistent set of criteria that need to be met.

But! Black Sails is a Deck13 game, and someone on the Venetica (also a Deck13 game) wishlist entry claimed that they posted something about being in negotiations with GOG, so there might be a glimmer of hope. Maybe.

Hm, you are hardly the only one that would like to see a game here that gog declined. There is a lot of them and the decision is gogs. As long as gog stays a curated store (boutique) you will hardly get to play the games you might wan't. At the end all you can do is to vote for the games you love. The same as I did for Hegemony III: Clash of the Ancients.

GOG is a curated store. There are several scheduled releases every week and that's it. On top of needing to be DRM-free, GOG tests to make sure the games run on modern OSs and systems.

Do you want a pat on the back or a scoobie snack for saying you don't use Steam?

There could be any number of reasons why GOG refuses to carry a given game.

Chief among them is the fact that, as 227 states, GOG thinks they won't sell. What brings them to this conclusion is anyone's guess. It might be any or a combination of the following:

* it might be an extremely niche (visual novel) or oversaturated (P&C adventure) genre

* the game might have serious quality concerns, including issues with platform-dependent features (for example, the game may make prominent use of Steamworks matchmaking for multiplayer, and the developer may not be willing to port these to Galaxy and would prefer a neutered version of the game instead)

* GOG might have had QA or licensing problems with the developer before (we all know what a runaway success Deck13's Jack Keane 1 & 2 were [/sarcasm])

* the developer and GOG can't reach an agreement on revenue share (for example, some devs may believe that because GOG has a smaller market share, they can push GOG into accepting a smaller share than Valve would)

* the developer may be expecting a much higher storefront price point than GOG is willing to offer

* the game has already been in numerous PWYW bundles or deep-discount offers on Steam

Of course, there may be mitigating factors that offset some of the above (the game might have lasting popularity, be from a popular developer, or be highly publicised), but it's presumptuous and arrogant to assume with snide remarks that GOG "hates money" or is being arbitrary.
