CDs sucks when you have no CD/DVD-Drive, I guess that's the main reason why I'm all in to the digital download :)
digital >> optical

Potzato: Yes, that's a good opportunity to branch a bit and dig out some of gog's treasures :

Maighstir: I'm well aware of that,
Oh yes, I figured so. It was just the occasionnal promotion for the newer crowd.

Maighstir: but it doesn't feel the same having a cover and disc I printed by myself. On a similar note, I've printed only one cover and made a disc of only one game - and those are not even the same.
Once upon a time I thought about making my own covers and artsy autoruns. My laziness was stronger :I
I just want to preserve space in my room that is why i buy digital mostly nowadays
I used to argue over this until I realised the advantages cross over both ways - You can burn your GOG installers onto a CD-R/DVD-R/BD-R as a backup at which point you've now got a "disc version". And for many older CD/DVD games, you can rip the disc image to an ISO image file at which point with an ISO mounting utility that turns it into a virtual drive, you've now got a "digital installer" (that can also be re-burned in the event of losing / damaging the original disc).

Tip for those complaining about lack of shelf space : You can save a lot of space with those "Amaray 6 way" jewel cases that can squeeze up to 6x discs into a single-width case (or 4x discs with a thicker instruction manual). Not just for games, but music, TV series, movies, data backup sets, etc.

For Tropico series, the game is regularly in GOG's sales so you might as well wait for that.

snowkatt: i prefer physical media myself
People with houses larger than my backpack make me envious. But only sometimes.

I wonder how an analogue file would be stored on an SSD.

Better be precise, before "someone" will show up with other ideas :P
Optical > Digital
Once again.
Hang me for backseat modding, but I don't think a format debate was the purpose of this thread; the OP only wanted answers to their specific questions.

I imagine the baity thread title is throwing people off.

cogadh: When I first joined GOG, I used to burn the downloaded game installers to DVDs to keep a permanent, totally offline and portable backup. Nowadays, I keep an external hard drive loaded with my games. I have now gone through at least five major PC hardware upgrades or HDD replacements and three different OSes and have not lost a single game. Point being, whatever advantage disks might have had over digital downloads in portability is eliminated by proper backups.
^This. And it's easier to organize & manage digital copies.
I go for digital because:

- It doesn't take up space.
- It's usually cheaper.
- It's available immediately.
- Many PC's don't have an optical drive. (Our family's main laptop and my secondary laptop, for example.)

I currently see no benefit for physical.

BrandeX: Literally the opposite - that's digital libraries. I have bought the same games a few times because I forgot I had them already on Steam/GOG/Wherever...

Hey, this game looks cool and it's on sale! <BUY>

Later... hmmm. I think I already have this.... yep.
It's not literally opposite because physical doesn't prevent it in any way. Many years ago I almost bought Pulp Fiction 3 times on DVD, only that last time I decided to check before I bought, then realised I already bought 2 copies. Never watched either of them. :)

So I'd say they're pretty much equal, unless you buy at only one digital store, in which case digital wins this point.

Wolfehunter: CD DVD or blue-ray is always better to have a physical copy.. Digital is more convenient.
LOL
