Got some Q’s you’d like the devs behind the game to A? Join the team behind Crypt of the Necrodancer for a special forum Q&A session!

A gamedev duet from Brace Yourself Games, Ryan and Heather, are here to answer all your pressing questions about the game, the life behind game development, or their favorite cat video of all time, from from 8pm GMT to 10pm GMT (click the times to check when that is in your time zone).

Here’s a short bio of our guests to give you something to start off with:

Ryan (Creator/Designer, BraceYourselfGames)
-- Has been creating independent games professionally since 2004, including games like IncrediBots
-- Started programming games as a hobby when he was 6
-- Designed Crypt of the NecroDancer by accident, with help from Michael Jackson

Heather (Community Manager/Producer, BraceYourselfGames)
-- Been working in video games for over 10 years.
-- Designed her first board game in middle school, but gave up that lucrative career due to homework demands.
-- Office mates include 1 dog, and 2 cats.

Now that our Crypt of the Necrodancer guests have been introduced, we’d like to remind you our Q&A rules for this Q&A to work as smoothly as possible:

Not all questions might get answered during the Q&A. This means your specific question might go unnoticed or unanswered, but feel free to read along anyway and hang out with us - it’s gonna be fun anyway!
Be nice. This means no abuse, harassment, name-calling and the like.
Don’t spam or take over the thread to go off-topic. This will help us all keep track of incoming questions and help you get the most out of this event - and keep our guests involved!
Try to look through some recent questions before asking a new one. If the Q&A has been going on for a while, it’s likely your question has already been addressed.
Try to keep it about Rampart. Just kidding, we’re sure the devs have lots of subjects aside from Crypt of the Necrodancer that they’d love to have a chat about with you guys!

Let’s get this show on the road!

HauntedGeode: Which character is your favorite to play as?
I prefer Cadence! I like speedrunning as her. But I think Melody is also pretty fun. I think Dove is hilarious :)

andreiv72: regarding the usb dance matt did you have one of the team to be the test subject.
If so did you all start laughing.

Im tempted just to get the matt to see how well my over excitable 2 year old does in the game
We tested it first at an indie party here in Vancouver! It was pretty ridiculous :) But it wasn't until demoing it at PAX Prime 2013 that we were sure that people really loved the dance pad mode.

I'm sure your 2 year old will do well! You should search for the video of EladDifficult (a twitch streamer) getting his corgi to play the game (fairly successfully!) on a dance pad :)

NecroHeather: Mine is Choral (the player 2 skin of Cadence), and I also really like the challenge of Monk.

JudasIscariot: How do you get over the habit-forming gold, though? :P All of my deaths were due to grabbing gold out of habit :D
There is a mod you can get that makes piles of gold look like spike traps, btw! Hehe. It helps!

It's super hard! That's why I like it. It makes me actively focus on the game in different way than I do otherwise. It's also helps to mod the game to skin the gold so it looks dangerous.

HauntedGeode: How did you manage to get such an amazing person as Danny B to create the music?
I just happened to know him through a friend, and he was impressed by the concept and prototype!
What RPG-project are you most expect?
How big did you expect Necrodancer to get when development first began?
What are your thoughts on crowdfunding?

Casval_Deikun: What RPG-project are you most expect?
Most anticipated RPG? I really enjoy CRAWL (by Powerhoof) and can't wait to see what it's like when it's finished! It may not meet your definition of an RPG though... I don't tend to play traditional RPGs much these days. I definitely did when I was younger, though.

I honestly had no idea. I knew it was a very fun game, but I was worried that people would dismiss it as a "gimmick game". That's why we put out an early "teaser trailer", to see if people would be excited about the idea. They were! Then we took the game to PAX and had a really good reception. Then we started entering festivals and getting some nominations, so our confidence slowly went up over time :)

Barry_Woodward: What are your thoughts on crowdfunding?
In general I think it's great! I love seeing smaller projects succeed and gain a following when they otherwise might not have had as much reach. That said I see a lot of smaller video game projects fail either before or after funding because the people who were looking for funding weren't experienced with game development. That bums me out both for those that supported them and for them since their ideas didn't get to become a reality.

I've been a part of a couple successful table top campaigns and I learned a ton! The main takeaway I have and want to pass on to others is that crowdfunding is not a pre-order system. No matter what happens on the other end you are pledging to support someone make their dream a reality and that is awesome!
Have y'all thought of adding a "calorie counter"? Some DDR games have this. It might be neat!
Taylor Swift or Katy Perry?

Thanks for answering the previous question!

A new one comes to mind: you have pets in the office, aren't you worried they'll pee on things? I mean, even house-trained ones do it sometimes, and I'd imagine cables and huge empty spaces are a greater invitation for pets to run around wreaking havoc...

That would be pretty cool! As soon as I get a dance pad my trusty fitness tracker is going to get more of a workout. ;D

Katy Perry! She's problematic in some ways, but I love her music. Got to see her live last year for my birthday!

Our whole team works from home so no issues with office temptations. That said my dog and cats are well trained, I'd be more worried about visitors with allergies than messes.

Thanks so much for all of your questions and the warm welcome to GoG! We are super excited to be on this platform. We're going to get back to work now, but feel free to post more questions for us on the forums. We'll answer them, just not in real time. :D

HauntedGeode: Can you guys tell me what species Coda is?
We can't tell you much about her background, but she looks a lot like that guy in the lobby...
