I used to do that to help me in planning my future trips.

There's one valid reason, and one intensely stupid reason.

The valid reason is if you're a more private person and prefer to have information restricted to those you trust.

The intensely stupid reason is that some people base the size of their e-genitals on how many names they've accumulated.

It is totally useless. If the sync with the gogwiki still worked, I would not have done this friend stuff. But since it is broken because of the account redesign it was either setting my wishlist to public or accepting a few friends and setting it to friends only. And for me the second option was the less evil choice ;-)
