I understand that modded properly it's excellent but 10 bucks is a bit much.

I wouldn't mind seeing Master of Orion 3 either, it's one of the third entries in a trilogy that I'm still missing.
Star Control 3 can also show up for that same reason.

I always see that one spoken of with much hate. Never followed it much - what do the mods address? What isit that initially turned people off so much?

I think basically extreme complexity with little reward. The mods address everything from the UI to the balance to the gameplay. Almost a total remake the way I read it.
