I don't think you missed something essential if i'm not mistaken...

FearfulSymmetry: Yep, our languages are pretty similar. I can understand German just fine, but I suck at the grammar. Thanks to my comprehension skills I got an 8 on my final exam for German, but don't ask me to construct a grammatically correct sentence. To be honest, I'm also facing that problem with Old English. I don't tend to pay much attention to grammar, I just go for meaning, and usually the correct grammar becomes clear to me after that.
Well i'm not able to speak it and to understand spoken dutch but i always have the impression that many dutch understand/speak some german. And yeah german grammer can be a pain even for germans :).

BTW: What's an 8 for a grade? I'm not used to it ;).

I don't think you missed anything important. Were you here on Thursday when we bombarded owl with gifts for her birthday?

That reminds me, I wanted to check who else besides Agent and owl has posted the birthday on the wiki.

That impression is probably correct, as it is an obligatory subject in high school here (at least for two years, after that it's a choice between French and German). Glad to hear I'm not alone in my struggles. :P

I didn't know that german was obligatory in the Netherlands...
No you're not alone. Try constructing a grammatically correct passive future perfect sentence :P

Yep, we're tiny, so we have to get by somehow, and without communication we wouldn't be able to get very far. French is also obligatory for three years. :)

Ummmmmmm ........ nope! *hides* :P

So you actually have to learn english, french and german along as foreign languages?

Yep (although I'm not quite sure how everything functions at all the different levels of education). I think English is obligatory for everyone for the entirety of the high school period (which was six years for me). Then, at my level, French was obligatory for the first three years, and German for the second and third year. After the third year, students are required to choose to continue with either French or German, although you're also allowed to do both. I continued with German because I have no natural aptitude for French.

What's it like in Germany? Do you only have English?

Okay thanks. We have something similar in Germany but it can vary in the different states...and schools (some schools have latin as obligatory)
But i had english from my third year in primary school and then from the third year in high school (Gymnasium) i had to choose between french and latin. I went with french. But afterwards there is the possibility to learn spanish or russian or whatelse is offered but nothing of this is obligatory. i had to stay with one langauge unitl the end which was in english in my case :).

Oh, you get a lot of different choices, that's fun. Yes, we also have some schools that offer Latin and Greek (amusingly, those are what we call gymnasiums here). I've also heard of some schools offering languages like Russian, but that's not common here. I went to a school for bilingual education myself, which means that 50% of my classes were taught in English.

I think the term gymnasium in germany comes from those schools which offer greek and latin too. In most cases german and english are probably enough as ther are a few more german speakers :P.
