FearfulSymmetry: Yep (although I'm not quite sure how everything functions at all the different levels of education). I think English is obligatory for everyone for the entirety of the high school period (which was six years for me). Then, at my level, French was obligatory for the first three years, and German for the second and third year. After the third year, students are required to choose to continue with either French or German, although you're also allowed to do both. I continued with German because I have no natural aptitude for French.
What's it like in Germany? Do you only have English?
Okay thanks. We have something similar in Germany but it can vary in the different states...and schools (some schools have latin as obligatory)
But i had english from my third year in primary school and then from the third year in high school (Gymnasium) i had to choose between french and latin. I went with french. But afterwards there is the possibility to learn spanish or russian or whatelse is offered but nothing of this is obligatory. i had to stay with one langauge unitl the end which was in english in my case :).
HypersomniacLive: Ah, wasn't on much last week, and I totally missed that. Must have been a complete blast.
Yeah it was really great :). I'm sorry you missed it...
