I haven't had a home console since the Wii, but from what I've seen at friends' places, the newer consoles are definitely part gaming part media. Especially Netflix it seems like.
I've been in Japan for like 2 years at this point, people love them mobile games, although it's more smart phone games than anything else. I know the PS Vita was huge here, and that was pretty much just for gaming. The last newest true gaming handheld device I remember is the 3DS, which isn't that old. At this point smart phones have taken over. It's one less thing to carry around, and at least here, people actually like the dead brained games that pretty much play themselves. There's also Fire Emblem whatever on the phone, which was a huge hit.
There may be a social aspect to not being seen with a gaming device, even though everyone's playing shit on their phones anyways. Japanese people have been taught to care about how they are seen, I believe. But that's a whole other topic.
As for the kids, they also have smart phones, but I do see more 3DSes with them. Shit, If I was allowed to play games on weekdays when I was young, I'd have played pokemon all day too.
I have seen Nintendo Switches carried around. That was kind of crazy to me.
IMO, there aren't pure handhelds anymore really. At least here, smartphones and their shitty mobile games have taken over. And it's not going away. I know one of my co-workers consistently plays PUBG on his iPhone. Shit makes money I guess. Them kids are gonna have terrible neck pains later.
