Magic left ajar.

The World Next Door is coming soon, DRM-free to GOG.com.
Through all her teenage life, Jun identified more with the "monster" people of Emrys than the human world. Finally, she gets to cross over to hang out with her beastie bestie Liza and her enchanting gang of misfits. Naturally, as the group is fooling around with magic, Jun gets trapped and now they all must figure out a way of getting her back to our world before it's too late. Mastering the art of matching runes and interacting with the locals seems to be the ticket.

I thought this might be interesting. I read all the negative comments, I want to say, you don't even know the game dynamics and its pace, nothing. If it not a kind of game you like, there's no reson to hate. I don't spew hate on every strategy war game looking all the same to me.
Also, how is this Undertale?

Well I'm subscribed to the game, so I will be notified when it got released. It does look charming.

pbaggers: This... I'm not sure what this wants to be......
If I had to hazard a guess I would think 2D Life Is Strange with mystical fantasy elements. Just my best educated guess.

This isn't anime/manga style artwork, this is generic Tumblr rubbish. I bet this will have characters to fill every progressive checkbox. Gays, lesbians, other alphabet soups, and they'll all make sure to tell you their pronouns. I predict there will be a not-so-subtle reference to Trump. I haven't seen any fat people in the pictures/video so that's not very inclusive.

This doesn't look to be up my alley but will this dev let people who support Trump buy it or will they go the route of the 2064:ROM devs and tell us to fuck off?

Thank you very much for not making me look like the hateful prick here.

You mean... there are people who aren't straight white men? I fear this strange new information, oh why must developers continue to remind me that the world isn't the cosy homogenous utopia I must continually delude myself into believing it is! If only they would go back to pretending that only people who are exactly like me could possibly be heroic or interesting!

Anyway, I can't really telll from the trailer how the battles work- could be a great strategic puzzle, could be incredibly shallow. But the worldbuilding looks good, so this could end up being something I really enjoy.

groze: I... can't really understand what kind of game this is trying to be. From the trailer and screenshots, I assume it's a mix of puzzle with platformer and adventure?

The art style is really putting me off, too. And for all those old farts in these forums who hate everything Japanese, trust me, this looks bad even for those of us who do like the manga and animé style of drawing. It looks like a cheaply produced early '90s eurojank cartoon trying to pass off as animé, thinking kids wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Maybe there's some niche market of nostalgia for that crap? I assume so, there's nostalgia for the most awful things, out there.

I generally don't come into release threads to complain about a game, unless I know that game has issues or is broken, in which case I think it's fair to warn potential customers, but in this case I'm genuinely trying to figure out what makes this game special or something someone would want to play.

[EDIT] It seems Rose City Games, the devs of this game, helped with Hiveswap, by What Pumpkin Games, based on the (very cringy and aimed at edgelords) Homestuck universe, "[coordinating] Hiveswap's release strategy, including creating a launch trailer, managing review key distribution, market research, press and streamer outreach, and PR consulting". Assuming they, indeed, did the market research for that game and are using the same results for their own developed title, I don't see it being something most kinds of GOG customers (all the different ones there are) would be interested in getting.
mmmmhhh? weird game indeed... i had to check the videos to see what the game is about... at first sight my thoughts were; nice another visual novel that will be a nice addition to the existing collcection on GOG.
But..... and a major but it is, this is .... ?????????? my best bet would be to put it in the little girls game category like mentioned above.

There will be gamers who love this game but tbh this at GOG ? i had to slap myself in the face to make sure i wasnt dreaming i thought i was still browing the steam page.....

Anyway i dont mind it gets hee, not at all.... i do mind more or less that many other games that would have fit better were told to be too niche ....

Now i happen to be a very very niche guy, and if the commandos, fallout, jagged alliance, and all other classic games had dozens of 'sequels') ( ofcourse 2d and never fpp/no3d) i would have bought them all :D
Not because i am wealthy but just a simple niche guy, problem is niche guys always end up last they say :D

Niche is a term used in business. It basically means a product that is very popular within a certain community but doesn't have the broad appeal to go mass market. Generally any game that goes into an existing franchise will be niche.Aug 31, 2011

Another game brought to you by tumblr! Man, am I tired of this art style.

Yeah I know, it's petty to be dissing a game because you don't care for the art, but I've seen so many games that look exactly lke this. (The kinda VNs that are free to play on itch.) And the trailer is not telling me anything about the gameplay. Puzzle game maybe? Meh. Pass.

Well it isnt even out yet and some commenters above here have already denounced it. Jeez! Kinda early!
Let's give them a chance.

Its art samples are a bit too pastels for my visual taste, but nevertheless I think it looks nice visually, and sounds interesting as a concept so far (going by polygon and kotaku early peeks). A narrative-driven game hybrid of action + puzzle + fantasy, with branching dialogue, alternate world, and either misfits or a cross cultural story element.
I don't follow anime so can't comment on if it looks anime or not and don't care; the devs say its anime-inspired (not anime). I like the runes board, and the characters look interesting enough.

Though it's still in development, there are a few descriptions which are appealing.

Viz Media is the publisher; they are in the manga business and say they decided to expand into indie game publishing... Hmm. It is common for businesses to expand by branching into related areas, so ok. However as a gamer, I hope this new game is not a vehicle for VZ, but a serious attempt by Rose to make a game that stands on its own.
This is Rose City Games' first original game. It would be nice to read more about this decision directly from them.
Here are Rose City's previous projects, which were not games, but do look interesting: https://www.rosecitygames.com/projects/
Guys, it's a match 3 game. Dunno why it's not advertised as such. People know what they like. Would be good to keep the smoke and mirrors talk away from the customer.

That's what holding me back, but it seems it's not typical match 3 game, no?

None ever is ;) I just found https://compete.kotaku.com/the-world-next-door-turns-magical-brawls-into-puzzles-1826509490 about it, I don't know anything more.

Well that's one way of limiting your sales. Yikes, what a complete idiot. A lot of people voted for Trump who might want this game and the developer is telling them to do one based on their politics. Real classy (facepalms).

Anyway I'll probably buy it when it's...erm...free...
While I do not care for politics or agendas, I could be called "Anti-S*W" (since it happened multiple times already).
It doesn't matter at all but I needed to add this for what's coming next.

I had this game on my radar for a while and it may especially be for the DA. People may find that "tumblr" artstyle ugly, it catches my eyes, maybe not for the good reasons, but it does.

I may not pick it upon release but I really don't see why this game shouldn't be here or is GoG supposed to act as a GateKeeper of some sorts ?

I played Match3 set in gritty fantasy world, in japanese hentai style, in SciFi, some with RPG mechanics, some with rhythm, and even one set in a Star Trek coat of paint. I really don't see the problem here.

If it's any consolation I have no problem with the game being here.
