A rogue-like Talisman? How nice is that!
The retro-style works for me, reminds me of a very old C-64 game I used to play. [i]If you are curious, Vincent That this one seems to be a more dynamic version of Talisman: Origins, without dice rolls, weighs heavily in its favor. It also helps that Loop Hero doesn't seem to heavily rely on RNG but tiles and their changing my character's stats and types of monsters to spawn. Some put me into a serious disadvantage while others are advantageous. Still others are just for decoration. Place some forest tiles and wolves start spawning, one of which is a boss monster of sorts, while placing a village and fields or a lighthouse will help in one way or other. When placing cards spawning enemies, this is where one has to be very careful. Too many tiles placed too soon and it's game over before you know it.
Not sure whether my observation is correct but it seems that as I grow stronger so do the opponents. I don't mind so much in a game like this game as would be the case in an RPG. Wizardry VIII comes to mind ... You will never be able to finish the game unless you put in thousands of hours when leveling up too fast. Circa half-way through you'd have to face tons of enemies ... consider the night/fright ... mares and other enemies not actually in any encounter table for a given map and imagine them coming in numbers in addition to regular enemies of various levels you got to face in huge numbers ... This can turn a run even on the easiest level into an utter failure ...
My overall impression is very positive. I haven't tried the demo but found
this one and the
alpha and played them instead. This is one game I will make sure to buy once it is out.
