I know the codes for this are in the manual but can't flip between the game (and can't print out the former). What have other players done?

It's a DOSbox game, right? You should be able to Alt+Enter to exit full screen (and later go back to it), and use Ctrl+F10 (not F9!) to release mouse from dosbox window.
