Hi I am sending a ticket about this but I compared Steam Starbound files with GOG files bit by bit and I found a lots of unnecessary stuff there . It's huge chunk of data . And making installer bigger . I did this for windows version and seems Mac and Linux version is fine because installer sizes are around 650 MB .

So ;

In the main directory ;

giraffe_storage folder
koala_storage folder

In the win32 directory ;

output folder
stdout.txt
unpack_assets.bat

In the win64 directory ;
stdout.txt

All of those folders and files inside of them are unnecessary and its 645 MB . It's nearly doubling the installer size :) Please fix it GOG !

I added them to the checksum file too

Out of interest, how do you know those files are unnecessary? Have you tried removing them and then running the game? Some games, depending on how they are made will need extra items for instance Galaxy hooks if they have Galaxy support, fake files to remove the need for Steam client. Could even be a different version of the game. Just comparing apples to oranges will tell you nothing.

Checked MD5 hashes of all files . Also game working fine but it's already impossible if MD5 files are same
Also a sidenote , Steam version doesn't have any protection . You can delete Steam after installation :)
I was wondering why it's size bigger than Steam version it's all clear now

2x clean slate installs? AFAIK some of these folders contain player data; so if you compared with a running install there might be all kind of generated stuff stored.
Did you also contact Steam support about all of the DRM files that you didn't find in the GOG version? :P

Nope I did clean installs for comparison also those files you mentioned stored under storage folder after 1.0

Even clean slate might not match. A prime example is the Galaxy files, they would be different to Steam's. Also, if Steam has online saves it may include information for transfer of data. Looking at the filenames given:

In the win32 directory ;

output folder
stdout.txt
unpack_assets.bat
---
stdout.txt would look to me like a logging facility - i.e. debug information which maybe turned off by default in the steam version. Unpack assets - this looks like an install file, might be removed by steam or they might not be packed in the first place. Same with output folder, sounds like its linked to the unpack process. Maybe that these get cleaned up automatically by the steam install and not the gog one, or it might never happen.

The other two:
giraffe_storage folder
koala_storage folder
Too game specific, can't really say - maybe these had some additional aspects of control in the original so they had to be exported rather than kept in a package or something like that.

I would suggest if it really bothers open a helpdesk ticket, although it would be a long process trying to understand why these differ. Odds on its just a different version, we are always a bit behind here.

That is debatable at the best of times. The process is still downloaded via the client, and the client could be doing any number of things.

Are you kidding with me or something ???

Steam Starbound files are same with GOG Starbound files . I compared them bit by bit and did a MD5 , SHA-1 Check

You are still speaking about differences ? WTF ? I don't want to be mad but which differences are you speaking about ?

Also client doing nothing on Steam version . If you want to see buy it from Steam and uninstall Steam after download .

Well what is the post about then, you said there are differences, those folders and files you posted above. If the working files are the same and the game runs, then it is something to do with the method of getting the files and installing the files.
But, best of luck with that.

I mean working files are same . Not extra bogus files .

Half of the folders are from older early access builds , other folder is unpacked state of assets for probably modding or testing something . But you can always unpack them . Because already an unpacker there in both builds . And there is no point of provide it in regular installing build (Because modders already know how to do it and regular users not interested with those files) And game not need those files for work , it's only doubling the installer size .

I deleted the files you mentioned about and game is still working fine. They should have been clean up the game before release it to gog.

Also those files seems added with 1.0.3 update of GOG . That's explaining why 1.0.3 update is 708 MB but other updates are so small . 1.0.4 is 70 MB and 1.0.5 is 23 MB .
