I think Silent Hunter 3 is a better entry point. However, I wouldn't recomend SH2 or SH3 as a first choice if he wants to see if Modern Naval Warfare is suitable for him, instead, as you said, Cold Waters (intro) or Dangerous Waters (advanced), because old uboats are played in a pretty different way (mostly without thermal layers, with TDC... etc).
