Karterii93: Social Media (...) overindulgence in sharing everything you see, doing things IRL just to post it on social media sites, and the like. Online chatrooms (...) didn't affect the way we act and interact in the real world all too much.

Vythonaut: I agree with that. While I don't use any of the social media for personal reasons (although I do have some experience in Twitter/Facebook as I've been managing accounts for professional purposes), I think that while social media can be helpful to many people in several ways, lots of people use them extensively just for the sake of using them, which wouldn't be a problem if these people actually didn't get addicted to them (who haven't been in a situation where a friend contantly checked their FB account during the time you were out for a coffee/beer?) or didn't rely on them to build their "image" (which, from what I've seen from friends and other people close to me, appears to be quite false a lot of times).
It's not just that imo. I think social media is at least partially at fault for our black/white view of the world nowadays. You either HATE a product or LOVE a product. You either LOVE one political party or HATE it. I am aware all of that was true pre-social media as well, but man, I feel like it just got worse through all the sharing of click-bait headlines that make every situation seem either like a sign of the apocalypse or a message from God himself. I know this is an extreme statement on a thread that is just about whether or not chatrooms are still alive or not, but man... Do I miss pre-social media times.

Then again, I was probably just too young to notice that everything was already this screwed up before MySpace and Facebook were a thing. If we count YouTube as a form of social media as well, I really think it's hard to deny that it had a negative effect on how we perceive and talk about things. Don't like a movie? Time to make an ANGRY REVIEW. Liked the movie? Time to make a THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME REVIEW. We have always exaggerated our opinions so that we could fit into a group of people (haters/lovers) more easily, but man, this has gotten out of hand imo.

Is it just me that thinks social media is responsible for all of that?

zeogold: Depends. On the server I frequent, it's more often text than voice, although we'll do the occasional voicechat with the pretense of playing games (when we're obviously just joining to screw around). Even while in voicechat, the text channel's still pretty active.
Hey sorry to be a bother, but could I also receive an invite? I would love to be part of a gog chatroom.

I haven't been there for years now, mind you - so I don't know, what kind of people are there online nowadays.

A few years back, I had the same idea like you - going in a chatroom, and have some -hopefully- funny conversations with total strangers, like in the past...I have to say, it didn't go so well...first of all - I was one of the (if not THE) oldest users in the chat...and it really was not funny...rather disillusioning and depressing actually. :o(

But going by your post, you're 23 years old?
So, maybe the average age is more fitting to you than to me old fart ;)
