Tokyo_Bunny_8990: Cobra Kai was produced by another studio they later acquired.
Sure, but now it is theirs. Whether they hire the right people or acquire the right companies (others like Disney do the same), the end-result for the viewer is the same.
Tokyo_Bunny_8990: Stranger things has been pretty bad for a while.
It is running out of Steam and it is time for the show to wrap up (which it will in the next season I believe). I wouldn't say it turned bad, it's just not a show meant to last 10 seasons.
Tokyo_Bunny_8990: Witcher honestly sucks, not even accurate to the books with too much love for Yen.
Most viewers will not have read the book and won't care. Otherwise, it's not GoT in its prime, but I still consider it better than average.
Tokyo_Bunny_8990: Others I havent seen so cant comment but Squid Game is just live action anime.
Most people won't have seen the anime so for them it is just new material. Also, plenty of people don't like anime (I know some), so maybe this is more approachable for them.
Tokyo_Bunny_8990: Maybe its a new concept in the West but its a poor man’s Kaiji.
The concept of the rich watching the poor fight for their lives and the oppressive nature of capitalism is already captured far better in Kaiji, nevermind the fact that Kaiji actually earns his victories.
My wife is Japanese and she liked it (she is the one who suggested we watch it). Otherwise, yes, it's been done before in Asia and elsewhere (ex: 3%), but the execution is still good.
pds41: I would agree that in general, there are some decent TV series on or produced by Netflix (A Series of Unfortunate Events springs to mind, as do the first two series of Narcos and some of their films), although I personally find that their earlier content is more to my taste than their more recent output (probably down to the proliferation of streaming services - it was better when we only really had iPlayer, Amazon and Netflix) and to the drive towards the "mainstream" and the problems that brings in terms of content production.
Barring the misfires which are bound to happen, I think they are serving a very diverse audience and not all their content would be gold to everyone even if their execution was perfect.
For example, my tastes are pretty incompatible with people who enjoy reality tv, yet Netflix is trying to cater to us both.
