I recently refunded Dungeon Hack on Steam and bought it on GOG instead so I could both play it offline, and not have to deal with both the Steam launcher and the Forgotten Realms Archive - Collection Three launcher constantly being open in the background. However, I'm having an issue with trying to remap the controls in the GOG version.

Freshly installed, the GOG version of Dungeon uses the arrow keys to move up, down, strafe left, and strafe right, which is already different from the Steam version, which uses the original numpad layout. That wasn't too much of a problem, as I just opened the DOSBox remapper and changed those controls to WASD. What is a problem, however, is I have no idea which keys are mapped to turn left and turn right.

I've searched various forums for answer, and come up with nothing. I've tried remapping numpad_7/numpad_9, I've tried remapping home/pg up, I've tried copy and pasting the mapper-0.74-2.map file from various posts online, nothing has worked so far.

(P.S. I'm posting this in general because the Forgotten Realms Collection is forum is basically dead; it's a very old game for a niche audience and I would really like to find a solution.)

Since you're using Dosbox, have you tried running Dungeon Hack's SETUP.EXE within Dosbox if the game has one?

You may or may not find control configuration options there.

Also, have you tried running that game with Dosbox-Staging instead?

Dungeon Hack does indeed have a setup menu when you first launch the game, but it's only to configure audio cards. As for running the game using a separate program, I'm worse than a layman when it comes to old games. I already struggled trying to find and edit the .conf file in an attempt to remap the controls; I doubt I could figure out how to replace one version of DOSBox with an entirely different one.

You can try this info from the dosbox website while you have the game's dosbox window open. Hope it helps :)

This is exactly the issue, unfortunately. I was able to remap up, down, strafe left, and strafe right to WASD, but I can't remap turn left and turn right, because I don't know what the GOG version's default keys are. I've pressed every key on my keyboard while the game was open, with numlock enabled/disabled, and I simply was not able to find out what turn left and turn right were mapped to by default.

Did you try this yet?
(found in subforums)
Hmm. Idly asked, does this same issue occur in Dosbox staging?

Maybe Q and E for turn left right?
Anyways if it does not work, Uninstall the game and start over remaping your controls via DOSBOX remapper or delete the file with the key inputs. My guess is that your are using the remapper incorrectly. I did get hard times with it in the past..
You need to remap the new key pressing in the keyboard not using the virtual keyboard in the remapper tool.
But I have not too fresh the correct order of things.
Just a possible clue
Okay, so I managed to try it out with DOSBox Staging (I just downloaded the portable ZIP and then dragged the Dungeon Hack .BAT file onto the DOSBox Staging .EXE file) and the same problems still occur.

After that I tried copy/pasting the DOSBox Staging folder into Dungeon Hack's dedicated DOSBox folder in an attempt to replace the DOSBox installation that comes with Dungeon Hack, and that didn't work and complete flubbed my download, so I uninstalled and did a fresh reinstall of the game.

Launched the game using the supplied version of DOSBox, remapped up, down, strafe left, and strafe right to WASD, still the same problems. The problem is that GOG has either changed or outright deleted the inputs for turn left and turn right from the default of numpad_7 and numpad_9 (which again, the Steam version didn't do), and does not tell you what the new inputs are, so there is no way to remap them.

I have my keys remapped to WASD time ago

But according to my backed up remap file config file, the original controls are tied to the num pad. 7 and 9 for turning and 4 and 6 to strafe.

Right, that's what the original controls are supposed to be, and that's what they are on the Steam version of the game. However, on a fresh install of the GOG version, pressing numpad_7, numpad_9, the home key, and the pg_up key do nothing. The default controls on the GOG version of the game are the arrow keys to move up, down, strafe left, and strafe right. But it doesn't tell you what the new controls are for turn left and turn right, and I can't remap controls if I don't know what the default controls are.

It could be something caps lock/block num related

What I can say is that in my GOG copy the original controls are the cursors or the numpad, being 7 and 9 used for turning.

That is very strange. To make sure I'm not going crazy, I just uninstalled and did a second fresh reinstall of the game, and I kept numlock off during both the install and the launch of the game. And it didn't change anything. For some reason, the default controls on my version of the game are set to the arrow keys.

Yes. The controls are set to the arrows keys, and also to the numpad keys. 7 and 9 for turning. Tested twice

Anyways I can not be of more help but giving you the file I use. Try brute force and create manually a renamed text file called mapper-0.74-2.map And fill it with the WASD controls, at least they are what I use:

Obviously you will have problems when creating/typing the name of your character with the new config, so backup the original:

I believe I have not misplaced the versions, I was renaming them for testing reasons. But I believe it is right

And remember it needs to be "map" not "txt" for correct functionality.
