timppu: Too bad EA/Bioware has intentionally made it silly to try to expand one's existing Dragon Age game to the complete version, by making the separately bought expansion and DLCs outrageously expensive. That's the kind of bullshit practise I hate.
You don't think EA gave you the base game out of the altruistic kindness of their loving hearts, do you? You've heard of King Camp Gillette and his "Give 'em the razor; sell 'em the blades" business model?

timppu: Ok, so not pointless. That's good to hear.

Maybe I will buy the ultimate (=full) version of Dragon Age if I catch it in some deep sale sometime. Too bad EA/Bioware has intentionally made it silly to try to expand one's existing Dragon Age game to the complete version, by making the separately bought expansion and DLCs outrageously expensive.

That's the kind of bullshit practise I hate. So far GOG has fortunately had less of that, GOG users even complained when Risen 3 has a 0.10 euro (10 cent) price difference between buying the full edition, and the base game + expansion separately, LOL!
Yeah, it is definitely worth it. If you can get it for the prices I've seen it sell for, it's a no-brainer. It's one of the best modern RPGs I've played. If you want to play Dragon Age 2 at some point as well, keep in mind that DA2s DLCs can only be bought with BioWare-points. I paid 40 Kroner for DA2 in a sale, but buying the three story-DLCs for it would cost me 300.. :P

Not really, that's why I earlier called it "an extended demo". Some others though still try to argue "it is the complete game! all the DLCs are useless, you don't need them!".

Plus, another reason for offering freebies is to get people to their service (Origin). GOG has used this tactic numerous times too, but at least they don't make you pay through your nose to buy any missing pieces, in practice forcing you to re-buy the whole game. Like when CDPR offered a "free" The Witcher 3 for NVidia customers, it is still feasible for them to buy any expansion packs separately for it (e.g. in a form of the season pass), instead of having to rebuy some The Witcher 3 Ultimate Edition because buying the expansion pack(s) otherwise for your base game would cost you much much more, like is the case with Dragon Age.
Origins, as itself, is a full game. It has a start, a middle and a finish. The DLC's expand to it and add flavor. They are not required for one to fully understand the game. One might argue that Witch Hunt is essential, but that's an epilogue for one character path and bridges the game towards Inquisition.

Awakening on the other hand is a full-fledged expansion.

darthspudius: uh... I must be thick because I'm not following. Because you don't have some pointless dlc, you don't have the full game? I'm starting to think I'm not cut out for modern gaming. You have the full game, play it. The dlc are just nice little extras that are not required.

timppu: Pointless? How about e.g. these?

Stone Prisoner: HIGHLY IMPORTANT, because you get a new chacarcter to join your party, in this case a Golem and "it" plays a very important role in one of the main quest.

Witch Hunt: HIGHLY IMPORTAN depending on whether you do a certain part in Origins, this DLC is pretty much the true end to the game if you play Origins in a certain way.

timppu: Why would Bioware make pointless DLC for their game? Don't they want people to buy their DLC, if they are all completely pointless and irrelevant, as you suggest?

Say what you will, but at this point the base game is not the full game. It is a gimped version.

Random_Coffee: I do think the DLCs for Origins are awesome.

Pointless as in Witch Hunt being shit and Stone Prisoner hardly mattering. I don't think I ever had it in my party. :P
When doing the Caridan Forge quest, having Shale is actually a plus and some decent storytelling.
