timppu: Depends what those special editions make them special. I only want the version which has all the relevant gaming content (maybe éven exclusing multiplayer, I am not likely to play any game that is not called Team Fortress 2 online at this point), I am not interested in the "better" versions if the extra they contain is only fluff like a separate soundtrack, making-of videos, comic books etc. As long as all the gaming content/DLCs are there, I am fine.

Hence, the only thing that annoys me about the various editions is that I have to find out which exactly is the edition that contains all the gaming content... and nothing more. E.g. with Pillars of Eternity and various other games. I want buying games to be as effortless as possible, I don't like having to do detective work beforehand to learn what the differences are between the different editions (like PoE having three or four different editions, blech...).
Pretty much this.
Pillars of Eternity don't give upgrades.
At least in my case, yes, it has backfired.

Now I wait until the GOTY edition is released, I get a complete game, with most -if not all- of the performance issues and bugs stripped and better price. For some games I've waited a couple years! great things await for those who wait.

If u mean backfire as in making me hold off on buying a game that has multiple editions then definitely yes.

Every1 of cos wld love 2 hv the 'Best' edition of a game but many times i'm often put off by the asking price for such an edition. I wld even go 2 the extent of saying it can be quite ridiculous & a total rip-off for some games so no way am i going 2 pay 4 such an edition. I will however consider buying an 'inferior' edition if i feel the 'Best' edition contain extras that i do not really 1 or care 2 hv.

So the only thing then i hv 2 consider is whether 2 settle 4 an 'inferior' edition now or just wait & c if the 'Best' edition goes on a major sale in a couple of yrs down the road. Usually i choose the latter & if that doesn't happen then the developers ain't going 2 earn a single cent 4 me. Too bad 4 them, haha. :p

clarry: One thing that really really bothers me is that these days you have to buy the soundtrack separately or get one of these milk editions for it.

With the older GOG releases where soundtracks are often included by default, it's a good reason to buy a game that I might not like so much. At least I might like the soundtrack. Take that out, and I have much less reason to buy a game. And somehow I do not feel like buying separate soundtracks for games I do not own; it would feel a bit like buying an expansion that builds on the story of the base game, without ever owning the base game. So I don't. That's ultimately a loss for me and loss for whoever was trying to make monies.
Yes and no.

Was it the kickstarter of AI wars, I think so, where they decided to detach the soundtrack, also to honour more the musician in terms of fiscal reasons? This way the musician can release the soundtrack separately instead of just getting some royalty out of the game.
As usual two sides to it. AND unfortunate not enough information being directly available why.
I am not good with names, but some of the music of computer games I can imagine would do well as an album or single. If it is separated the musician could release the music via other means ;)
