Once again, hello book-loving GOGgers and welcome to a new year filled with other lives and worlds to experience, as well as depictions, analyses and commentaries about the one we happen to find ourselves in.

This is the place to list all the books you read in 2023, with as many and as few comments as you want about each. Asking for or offering book recommendations, exchanging impressions about books and having other discussions about books is also welcome.
If you want your list post to be linked to here, make sure to put "include me" in it at least until I'll add it here. After it's added, you may remove those words if you wish.
You may, of course, organize your "central" post as you wish, but if I may make a recommendation, it would be nice if on top of the full list of the books you read this year, for each title there would also be links to your reviews or commentaries posted either in this thread or elsewhere, ratings using whichever system you prefer, and if possible also dates.
In addition, if you want me to also include here a link to your profile on a book-related site, like Goodreads, LibraryThing or The StoryGraph, or even a personal site, or section of a site, dedicated to books, make sure to put "include link" in your list post at least until I'll add it here. Again, after it's added, you may remove those words if you wish. If you want multiple such links to be included, make sure to put "include" before each. If you add any such links without the word "include" first, I'll assume you don't want them added to the OP.
If I missed anything or you have any other questions or suggestions, feel free to PM me. And you may also want to do that if you edit your list post in order to add links to other profiles after I already added a link to the post here, so I won't miss the change.

Just a question about a book I haven't read yet -

I bought Name of the Wind because it is a trilogy and there are three books out. Then I learned that one of them isn't the story itself, just a sidebar or something, and that the series isn't finished yet after many years and might never be (a la Game of Thrones). Is it worth reading Name of the Wind and the second one or am I going to be left with a cliffhanger that is unresolved indefinitely?
Thanks

Calling others to weigh in too, because I already did in the other thread.
But will just say again that yes, definitely worth it imho. Before Stormlight Archive, was tempted to consider it the best series I read. Not an epic, entirely focused on one character and few others really depicted, few locations, no world-shattering events, but the atmosphere and emotional impact and wisdom in it...
Also see my brief reviews of them if you're interested:
The Name of the Wind
The Wise Man's Fear
The Slow Regard of Silent Things
Frankly, may even just read the first one if you want, and already have it. More than the first half of the second is really slow and mundane, makes up for it after that but takes a while to get there. As for the third, again, may be better not to have the conclusion of that series. Probably why he can't write it either.
As for Slow Regard, don't expect it to be anything like the "main" series. Or like a fantasy book, or any book really. For a "normal" person, can be mindnumbingly mundane and boring, entirely pointless. For a fan of the series otherwise, it can shine a bit of light on a secondary character, but little that's relevant and wasn't gathered from the main books. But its point isn't that. It's basically an 150odd-page "you are not alone" written for those who're different (mentally) and utterly broken and very much aware of it, and lonely, by someone who really understands how it is.

Awesome. Thank you
Człowiek w labiryncie [The Man in the Maze] by Robert Silverberg

A hateful man who chose to live in an isolation from humanity in an deadly city-maze build by a long gone ancient race of aliens. A part of the story is a search for a path through the maze, a sort of of a Big Dumb Object I suppose. We get to know motives of the man who decided he’d be better off living all alone in a deadly, desolate place like that. The novel is actually somewhat better than one could expect from its simplistic plot thanks to the metaphorical meaning of the maze.
The book feels dated, is terribly sexist, this edition desperately needed an editor and yet it wasn’t that bad.
I've started off the year with a murder mystery crime thriller spree. :)

I'll have to read something different soon.

Grim Work

Since I grabbed them for free and noticed that I can read them quickly and without struggling, I decided to continue with the adventures of Marigold the barbarian, now a chief without a clan, seeking vengeance. And I guess that Grim Work can be enjoyable if you pretty much unplug your brain and let yourself be carried away by such heroic tales that don’t shy away from graphic details and focus solely on the action, depicting characters who conquer overwhelming odds thanks to their incredible strength and fortitude, a solid dose of hero’s luck and a fair amount of stupidity on the part of their enemies. I do, however, recommend reading The Crystal Keep first, even though it was released later, since it offers context and some reasons to care.
The problem is that Grim Work hardly does any of that, the few chapters that depict scenes which took place before Marigold’s solitary attack on the wizard’s tower only briefly showing how he ended up being the only one left and knowing who to take revenge on. Considering his hatred towards wizards and how many he supposedly killed, including some that, by his own admission, weren’t really guilty of anything other than knowing how to use magic, it’s hard to understand how come he and his clan left Cezare to dwell so close to their lands for what seems to have been quite a while. And the action itself requires a completely unreasonable amount of suspension of disbelief, not just because of what Marigold is able to withstand or even all of the hero’s luck, but also because of what he faces. Not that it’s badly written, but the substance is worse than the form, and likely not even enough to set the stage for some tabletop gaming session… Not that it could be, since it depicts a single “player character”.

Rating: 2/5
