GREAT THREAD

I can't come up with anything that hasn't already been mentioned but this is too cool seeing everyone's different contributions and takes on different games in this regard.

I really love that KOTOR 1 and 2 have been mentioned several times. Love them or hate them, I always felt that the stories of those two games was horribly unappreciated. I for one NEVER saw the end of #1 coming.

Pherim: I'm trying to understand why this game is held in such a high regard by so many people
Maybe they were 12 and big into star wars when the game came out. I can see how it would've been one hell of a game in these circumstances.

It just doesn't hold up so well when you've matured a little and can see right through the shallowness and terrible acting & storytelling. It'll seem especially bad if you've been exposed to better games before.

Planescape: Torment and Deus Ex are must play for the philosophical ideas that they contain. Explore everywhere and talk to everyone.

The Witcher has a great take on morality and the medieval-fantasy genre so I'l add it to the mix.

Vampire:The Masquerade - Bloodlines is a really great introduction to the World of Darkness and has stellar voice acting.

Metro 2033 Redux is a great adaptation of a book that I'll also suggest.

And now my most interesting addition: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, a strategy game that tells its story in unconventional ways through research dicoveries, citations, cinematics of secret projects and interludes.

Honorable mentions: Thief 2: The Metal Age, System Shock 2, Psychonauts, The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone
SOMA
Darkwood
Thief: The Dark Project

I was 12 when I first played it on my Xbox. So yeah, young and on a console with no real RPG.

I bought it back recently on GoG and, yes, while I still somehow enjoy Star Wars (from a distance), it's not as great as I remember, even though I played it multiples times since I was 12. I do remember that those games added a whole new chunk of lore to the canon of the licence, such as the Old Republic, the Sith, etc as well as expanding the Universe. I do not know how much is true (and is probably not canon anymore thanks to the mouse), but that was kinda a huge deal back in the day.

I know it's not a popular opinion to have on the Internet, but I really fail to see why Bioware is held up so high.

Baldur's Gate ? Alright, I can see that. Neverwinter Nights maybe, even if it seems due to the modding community.

But Mass Effect and Dragon Age ? I still have nightmares. In retrospect, I liked KOTOR for its setting and Jade Empire since it was refreshing. That's about it.

As for my recommendations of a good plot, and please don't judge :

-Sanitarium
-The Longest Journey
-Dreamfall

fronzelneekburm: Thief: The Dark Project
This deserves a special note because of how #2 picks up from number one.
Your enemies in #1 become allies, kind of, and there is a lot of references to things that happened in #2, returning characters, settings, etc.

If it's good writing you want, I recommend Expeditions: Conquistador, Anachronox and especially Sunless Sea.

I'd love to be able to appreciate that by finishing #1 first, but I just gave up after my last attempted playthrough. Those levels just started to break my mind. Think I'll start with #2 if I ever jump back into the series.

It's a nice companion to the game, and it's only about three pages long.

AND it's included with the game extras.
