I don't currently have access to anything but Wi-Fi internet, and unfortunately I cannot get my current (crappy) little USB Wi-Fi Adapter to work in Ubuntu. It's one of those USB's that acts like a storage drive when you plug it in so it can auto-install its drivers under Windows. (Actiontec USB Wireless Adapter)

I know a number of people here are advocates of Linux. So I need advice. Should I look into purchasing something with better compatibility? (Suggestions please if so) Should I try a different distro of Linux? Is there something I'm missing here? Like a Linux compatible driver?

Any advice at all would be appreciated. I downloaded Ubuntu 17.10.1, made a boot USB, installed it, it booted fine. Literally the only thing blocking me seems to be this USB adapter. Googling this didn't net much but a bunch of dead ends...

Google says the important thing to look at is the chipset. Have a look at this article, maybe it can help I don't have specific knowledge of Linux.

Model number of the adapter?

I see a method of pulling up a log on what's happening. Can you give that a try please?

Hi, I checked a bit, what you're looking for is a program called "usb-modeswitch" which is available for Ubuntu 17.10. I didn't give an in depth look so you might have to read a bit about it but you're on the right track. :-)
I'm using a TP-LINK TL-WN822N wireless USB adapter. It's not too expensive, and it works in both Linux and Windows, but for a while it needed a cludge/patch to work fully. But it seems to be working fully these days even without the patch.

Darvond: I'm using a TP-LINK TL-WN822N ...
Thats fun! TP-Link TL-WN722N here, no problems for like 3 or 4 years, no firmware needed.

But also stuff in Intel-based notebooks and NUCs worked no problem. I think I only had problem with some realtek wifi dongle, it ended up trashed, was actually possibly defective.

For me, it was a Netgear dongle before, a...WNA3100.
After banging my head on the wall all day long trying every possible suggestion to get this thing working, I'm just going to grab a new adapter. I've needed a new one for a long time now anyways. The one I currently have drops constantly even in Windows.

Thank you, Darvond, I'll look into the one you are using.

Indeed. Just do a little research before you buy, in case there's a newer/better model or you see a catch you can't work with, okay?
