Darvond: I'm getting to this stunning realization that all the games I'm thinking of were post 1990 and happen to be drawing a blank on this year.
This may help to remember (the correct year):

Wing Commander!
It's in the poll and on the site, it's not hard to find.

I suppose I should put it bluntly: I was born one year later.
Rise of the Dragon stood out to me, I like the different timbres (if that's the correct word for it). The music is quite percussive, which I like, and makes me think of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, and such ... which is always a great thing in my book.
^Yeah that sounds about accurate, and it's fitting for that type of setting (though I have only tried it for a bit so far).

The Mega CD version is also pretty cool if you haven't heard it. It mainly uses chiptunes for music (MD chip combined with the sample-based chip inside the MCD addon).

Point taken, but then again, as a teenager I recall really liking a movie like Dirty Harry even though it was "before my time".

Then again there is also a point that much of the love for old game music comes from experiencing it yourself back in the day. That is probably why I hardly ever get excited about old NES and Commodore 64 game music because I never grew up with their games.

I can just say for myself that pretty much any C64 music I've heard, I've heard after its time and mostly outside of the games. Still love a bunch of it, but I did grow up with chiptunes at least.

I did kind of forget to llist C64 games in the poll for this year btw.

pearnon: Monkey Island, no contest. None of the others will elicit a crowd reaction in a game music concert, or be played by street musicians in France.

ResidentLeever: You've never heard Loom, have you? Or Turrican?
I have. But people who didn't play it couldn't hum the tune of either of them, nor is it played and covered the world over, unlike Monkey Island.

Well you're wrong there.

You seem to have a soft spot for those games' music, but your sentiment doesn't appear to be shared, if your poll is any indication (it is).

You could've looked them up on YT. Loom also featured classical music which is more well known than any of these games.

Then it can hardly be described as Loom's music, wouldn't you say? And I didn't need to look them up, as I know them, but maybe you should look up Monkey Island's theme/cover on YouTube to see how much more varied, widespread and beloved it is.

If it's used in the game and fits in with the rest, why not?

It isn't more widespread than turrican though, which you would know if you did

For the same reason that O Fortuna isn't called Excalibur's music.

It really is, as illustrated by your poll's results. And, even more important, it has a bigger appeal outside of gaming circles.

Again, check youtube. This is just a poll with like 20-30 people at most participating. Actually some of the more popular older vids have probably been removed as happens from time to time on there but I know Turrican 1-2 have had 100s of thousands of views at least.

I didn't see much of a crowd around those street musicians though. :P
