Luned: Depends on what your "important" stuff is.

Photos of your dog? GOG installers? Dropbox away.

Your passport number and bank account info? CD, USB stick, external HD.
This.

For stuff I want in the cloud for backup / convenience, I generally use Spideroak. They make a bunch of noise about security and privacy, whether its true or not, I don't know, but as a sales pitch, it worked on me. Except, I didn't actually give them any money.

dewtech: THIS THIS THIS!

It's almost the same as giving a closed box to your nosy neighbour who you don't know that well and tell her to keep the box safe.

nightcraw1er.488: Just to add, THIS ^! Whats the point of getting DRM free games, and then putting them in a place where your reliant on a company?
I hope I understood you correctly. Then we don't have many stores in Estonia where you can buy boxed games and they are grossly overpriced there. I buy games here, download them and hold/backup them on my own home server.

Best free place to backup stuff online?
I'd say, nowhere is safe no matter what each site claims about privacy and all that. If they are really that very important then maybe they shouldn't go online at all. Using an external hard drive and an encryption software like VeraCrypt is a very good way to keep them safe.

If you want a cheap (not free) solution to store files online you could setup a Raspberry Pi system as a FTP/SFTP server. There are many guides and videos how to do this step by step. Running such a system consumes very little power and doesn't take up much space in your house.

Ah, no the first bit was to agree wth your points. I then, in addition to that asked the question of the OP why they would buy DRM free games, i.e. from here, and want to store them in an online storage, as that then requires access to that onlne system which could prevent access to your files.
I use SyncThing and my mother's and my sister's PCs. And of course I've set their PCs to back up on mine and between them.
NSA.

Oh nice, nuances in vernacular English. i'm only used to official handbooks and instructions and technical english.
And yeah, cloud storage is bad, just create a home server from old computer and buy more hdd-s (HGST and WD Reds or blacks) into it, get a raid card into pci-e, but debian/centos on it, best solution. Easy peasy, also no "site admin" or someone else with permissions out of ass can check or snoop your files.

Green_Hilltop: So there are no other reliable free services besides Google Drive, Dropbox and Mega?

Trilarion: There are tons:

But I don't have the knowledge to recommend anything. I would just backup on an additional harddrive.
Thanks everyone for all your answers! I think this is the best solution as it lists various companies and I can store stuff on more than one server.

Other than that Tresorit and Giga.gg sound best from the places mentioned, although I'm not sure of the security/reliability of the latter, so I'll Google it and check it out - but 500GB is half of my HDD, so that's awesome!
