F### ME and F### MY LIFE!

This guy seems very upset because, in his mind, games (or game makers) use gender to defy what he sees are the standard and unalterable conventions of reality (both Einstein and Hawking would like to have a word with you here but I digress), however he doesn't seem to have a problem when they do the same thing with dragons, wizards, vampires, zombies, goblin tinkerers, going the speed of light, robot gunfighters, talking tentacles, humanoid coffee cups, Kerbals, time travel, Strogg, Jedi, Sith, Cthulhu, walking talking plastic army men, octopi pretending to be human, Harry Potter, worms using bazookas, worms using machine guns, worms calling in air strikes, space pirates, Rupture Farms, Klingons, shadow men, Lego Batman, using computers to project yourself back in time to the body of an ancient assassin you were in a past life, mutant blobs, lizards wearing sunglasses, mages, Witchers, and Lara Croft's bosom.

So what gives?

And don't bother to answer that devoras, because we already know the answer. :D

Do you? You don't seem to understand.
I wonder if this fake outrage is considered graduating from giving a fig over dating a member of the same sex or of a different species in an RPG.
Although I still have a bone to pick with Dragon's Dogma and allowing your hero to bag a preteen girl as your romance ending.

Eh, no reason to be outraged by those things, they don't violate rational thought.

LootHunter: Gender IS synonim of biological sex. Any other definition of gender doesn't make sense. Also dtgreene argued with me about sex being defined by biology.

richlind33: You're mistaken. It has a range of meanings, and is most commonly used to denote grammatical categories pertaining to masculinity and femininity.
And? In english grammar you call a man he and a woman she. Or not?
I will still try to explain my point, and try to be as succinct as I can.

At a base level are the logical absolutes, law of identity: A=A(a thing is what it is), law of noncontradiction: A != !A(a thing isn't what it isn't), law of excluded middle: everything is either A or not A.

Language itself is essentially a 'map' for reality. Example: I have a cup, we have assigned the word 'cup' to point to a specific object in reality, named a specific type of container we use to contain liquid for consumption. Using the map analogy, if there is a set of mountains in an area in reality, I will write that on my map and label it with a word. Instead of 'mountains' I could use whatever word I wanted, let's say 'florb'. By changing the word, the label on my map that I use to describe what is a physical object in reality, the mountains, I have not changed anything fundamentally about those mountains. If I change the label from mountains, to florb, to relf, nothing changes about those mountains. They are still the same physical object with the same properties no matter what I call them. The only thing I accomplish by changing the label to different words, is making it more difficult for anyone else reading the map to understand what that label points to in reality.

What has been suggested here in the forum, is that by changing the label on the map we can change what the physical object is in reality. Example, that changing the label from 'mountain' to 'river', that it can physically change the mountains in reality into a river. If you want to use a different label for the mountains that's fine, but we still need to know what the new label is supposed to be pointing to in reality or else the map is useless. What we label something is less important than what something actually is, labels are arbitrary and intended to facilitate communication.

THAT is my only problem with the game.
What is the name of that circling motion you make with your index finger that resembles a helicopter? I'm doing that right now.

richlind33: Gender is sometimes used to refer to sex, but the two are *not* synonymous.
avatar
devoras: You can use them interchangeably, and the secondary characteristics of gender is based on physical biology anyway. In dictionaries one of the definitions of gender listed is 'sex'. Trying to use them NOT interchangeably just muddies the language, that's part of the problem I have with the pronoun use in this game, and frankly society in general.
Perhaps your preconceptions are the source of your consternation. Again, gender is most commonly used to denote grammatical categories, and has been since the 1400's. Yes, gender and sex *can* be used synonymously, but it's a mistake on your part to assume that is always the case, and you may well be misinterpreting what DT is trying to communicate.
Asking me to choose my pronoun without my gender is the same as handing me a piece of paper and asking me to draw whatever landscape I want on it, as if the map is all there is, ignoring that the actual landscape in reality even exists. The map isn't the important part to know in the overall equation. The map is not reality.

Reality doesn't operate in accordance with taxonomy, so it's a mistake to think that that which doesn't conform is somehow wrong.

I think that's the whole point of what devoras says. If like DT you just pull definitions for things from you own head, you can't communicate with anyone else who have different ideas.
