J Lo: No. Why would they make it smaller? I think I read somewhere that Durance of Hate actually increased in size. This was around 2007/8, so it would have nothing to do with D2R. The maps haven't changed for the remaster.
I don't see why they'd change it. Most of the map data is in a csv file in Diablo 2, which specifies the size, connection, layout, etc. And it would be probably very easy to port the map generation function (likely a variant of
Wave function collapse).
Being able to see further ahead may mean more stuff has to be spawned or can spawn less just off screen than the original version. Though i wouldn't be surprised if it creates N objects, with XY locations, and then actually does the full details once you are close enough for it to matter. Though on 4:3 i always remember immediately as soon as you could see them, they can see you, while the wider screen a little further out you could see them and plan before having to freak out.
