Tarm: I've almost exclusively played the steampunk faction in RoL and for them trade is key. Keep pumping out those trade ships at the start and send them to the nearest sites and cities. At the same time build up your military and technology. Trade income helps with this. When sites and cities start to join use the joined forces for defence and start expanding aggressively with your built forces. Usually this means I go kinda slow in the beginning but when I start to expand aggressively it's a steamroller. :)
mystikmind2000: Interesting, but my ROL is on disk.... so now that i am used to playing games from a Steam or GOG library, i cannot be bothered having to frig around with disks anymore!! lol.... although i think Steam has a trick for that if i remember correctly?? hmmm
Tarm: Very interesting read!
I heard loads of good stuff about RoN and was irritated that I missed it when it was available and playable. Then I got RoL and then wanted even more to try RoN. So when I played the HD version I got very disappointed and didn't know why. Thought it was because I did something wrong. Now I know differently. :)
mystikmind2000: Well i think the way forward with RON for me is to get a cheat code or two and use that to deal with the unwanted 'additions'. But because i have played the original version extensively, i know exactly what shit does not belong, whereas you will not know, so it is more difficult for you to do this?
Edit: oh, you know what..... i should go and look for a mod that restores the original version.... i am sure there must be one around,,, let me see?
I don't even know where my RoL disc is since my last move. I miss it!. :( Even though I also have got used to not needing them anymore.
I might try to get a friend to play RoN coop against the AI with me and figure stuff out that way. I'm more of a skirmish player than a campaign one in strategy games. Campaigns just lock stuff to create artificial advantages and disadvantages.
If you find a mod I'd be interested in that too. Maybe I'll even like RoN HD then.
F4LL0UT: Sounds very much like the issues that plague ARMA: Cold War Assault which includes the campaigns of both the original Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis and the Resistance addon. If you had Operation Flashpoint and the Resistance addon you still had access to the original game's executable that the base campaign was designed for. In ARMA: CWA you only have access to the Resistance executable. The problem is that the Resistance executable includes changes to the gameplay that render the base campaign virtually unbeatable, specifically the AI's range has gone up and you will sometimes get fired upon by large groups of enemy tanks which you were supposed to engage in series.
mystikmind2000: Well the general trend is that games get harder.
It is about the squeaky wheel getting the grease......
The squeaky wheel are all those elite player asseholes that have time to play extensively and have time to go on game forums mouthing off how to make the game harder.
As for all the rest of us casual gamers,,, well tough shit.
Thank God i can come and find old games on GOG that are still playable for normal human beings! lol
I actually think what's happening is developers getting genres confused. New RTS games have more in common with old arcade games than old strategy games. Speed and reflexes is your most valuable skill set in new RTS games.
Generally speaking of course.
