Hey, I'm wondering if anyone around here can help me a little with Zbrush.

I need to know in plain English how to paint a texture on a model and then save the texture. Videos often think I actually know what I'm doing, I don't really.

Something simple like;

1) Open a zbrush tool (model), okay.

2) Press some button, set brush settings to?

3) Paint on model

4) Save texture file as image.

The model is totally fine, all layed out UV's.

The UI can be a bit of a mess at times ;)

Load model, place on canvas, enable edit mode.

Disable zadd or zsub for the brush, enable rgb, choose a color or texture on the right side and start drawing. Opacity control is close to the z intensity options, middle panel.
Standard brush is fine, change mode (dot etc...) as you need it, maybe try alpha maps from the alpha panel.

Make sure your model subdivs are high enough to allow detailed painting, polypainting depends on it.

To generate a texture map go to the texture tab, select Create from Polypaint (its called something like that), cloning it loads it into the texture panel were you can export it. Or just export the model with textures in the end.

Kinda hard to describe... and not sure if thats the best method, but it worked for me before. I think its explained in the classroom videos too.

Thanks a lot, I'll try that next time I'm fiddling around in it.

A few more questions for anybody?

So I painted directly on the model which works fine, it seems to have no texture in the texture panel added, but painting right on it. The thing is, it seem to only export a 1024 pixel map, any idea how to color>texture a larger file?

Or;

Created a new, large 4096 texture, but I can't seem to paint on it anymore? Any ideas?

You can select a texture size under the UVW settings, up to 8k.

I think once you create a texture it gets applied to the model, polypainting works by directly painting on the model though, disabling the texture again (texture map field) brings you back to the polypaint mode, continue drawing and use new from pp again to create an updated version, just takes a few seconds.

Like said, not sure if thats the best way, its just how id do it...
I think I have an old version of Zbrush, which is even more of a pain in the ass. But it worked, ty.
