I'm trying to buy some games using my (Australian) American Express card, but GOG.com keeps telling me the payment failed... I spoke with American Express, and they said they cannot even "see" an attempt at payment, so therefore it must be something on GOG.com's end.

GOG.com customer support are useless - I sent them an e-mail and despite receiving an automated "we received you support request" reply nearly a week ago, I am yet to receive an actual reply...

So yeah, is anyone else having problems making purchases with an American Express credit card?

Is it something to do with the extra payment security they added? Perhaps the security thing isn't loading? There's supposed to be a little box from your card provider.

This is what I was thinking of, but it looks like they've disabled it so it probably isn't that.

That's the error (attached), so maybe it is something to do with this "3D authentication" or whatever GOG.com are calling it?

Sure would be helpful to have some feedback from GOG.com seeing as, you know, I want to spend some money here and all...

Your AMEX card is fine. I used it just last night and it went through no problem.

It sounds like it might be, although that's not some weird name GOG thought up. A lot of stores in the UK have been using this authentication method for 3 or 4 years, so I wasn't all that surprised when it eventually reached GOG. I guess Australian retailers haven't adopted it yet - I would guess that was the problem if GOG weren't claiming they'd deactivated it for that reason.

Well I'm having different results and when GOG.com finally replied to me last night, they confirmed that this is a known issue with AMEX cards... They did not elaborate on exactly what the issue is, though I suspect it is probably something to do with that 3-D Secure issue. Might be an AMEX-specific thing or an AMEX Australia-specific thing... When I did a seach on "3-d secure", it lead me to a Wikipedia article which indicates that this is the generic name for a whole heap of second-step authentication methods, such as Verified by Visa (which Australians have had for close to ten years).

Is it a debit or bank card? If that is the case you need to call your bank and tell them to allow all purchases on this site in the future to avoid such. Calling american express if this is a bank card won't work in such cases.

But on a side note, do American Express even have debit or "bank" cards? My understanding is that they almost exclusively do just credit cards (they still do charge cards - but it's secondary to their credit cards these days)...

I don't know off hand. I just assumed they allowed what MC and visa allow with most banks, which is to allow use of the MC or Visa logo on their card and then their card can be used anywhere such brands are accepted.

Did you get this sorted mate? I've been having this issue for months now but only thought to search for it now.
