kai2: IMO much like
Hudson Hawk, it's a movie that mainstream hated but has a definite cult following.
TheMonkofDestiny: I realize you prefaced this with "IMO" but I have to question whether the film version of The Avengers has an actual cult following beyond the pseudo-ironic "Sean Connery in a bear suit!" styled "fans".
That movie isn't good, that's fine, but I think one of the reasons a number of people have such a distaste for it is due to how much of a disservice it does to the television series. It seems kind of strange now, given how many "let's make a film outta this show!" examples we have and how often they've deviated far away from either the entire point or just simply the tone of the material they're based off of and have seen bigger successes than The Avengers did.
As both a fan of the tv series and the film, I don't tend to agree.
You are certainly allowed to disagree that The Avengers is a "cult" movie, but I've spoken to more-and-more people who are now enjoying it... where at release no one claimed to like it at all and it was in fact "trendy" to attack it. Perfect movie? Absolutely not. Entertaining? Yes... if you can just sit back and enjoy it without the baggage.
As for purists...
It's a movie... and IMO didn't actively undermine the series. This wasn't like the AMC remake of The Prisoner.
This blog sums up my thoughts on the film almost exactly:
https://theruedmorgue.blogspot.com/2006/11/avenging-avengers.html I think a reflexive cynicism has taken hold of many and they are quick on the attack anything lacking that same oppressive cynicism... or that flirts with childish fun. Hudson Hawk... The Phantom... The Avengers... all IMO have this childish fun... (again)... if you can just sit back and enjoy it without the baggage
But that's just my take
