So, due to an exchange of tweets, I got the idea for a visual novel (with some bisexual interracial content, royal way to get featured on Polygon/RPS with this ^o^). I have more or less the story and different paths in mind but for research puposes, I should play some Yaoi visual novels to see their ways of handling storytelling (not the same as playing Phonix Wright & co). I'm not looking for "teen coming out of the closet" stories but serious adult stories (sex scenes are ok). Preferably free ;)

Especially with pairings that makes no fuckin sense, and they are all written by female authors.

Anyway, the OP won't find much free material in that regard, but MangaGamer has just released a high profile yaoi game "No, Thank You!!!". It's not free, but there is a demo available, though I don't know how large of a game part the demo covers.

I know of a site for download erotic visual novels in English. Because... errr.... Ok, fine, because I didn't want to pay 150$ on an imported boxed copy of Fate/Stay night. I still bought one when I was in Japan, but now that Ataraxia is also translated I'm back pirating. I'm a horrible human being like that.

But I digress. Point is, it's a site to download visual novels in English via piracy, which is why I'm not going to directly link it. I have not looked much into what games are there as I knew exactly what I wanted, certainly a lot of boobies on first look, but since I haven't exactly been digging around there may be some yaoi there. If interested, ask and I'll pass you the link, you can then dig on the site to see if there's any yaoi there. Up to you and your moral beliefs.

That said, while not an expert, I'm pretty sure yaoi is by definition meant to have no plot whatsoever. It's meant to be pure dumb porn. For homosexual romantic stories that take themselves somewhat seriously as an actual story, shonen ai is the tag to go for. In manga at least, I don't really know much about visual novel scene.

^You are incorrect, Pina. Within VN community yaoi is a label for any game with male/male pairings that also has sexual content. The amount of that content varies wildly. It might be pure porn, but it also may be very low on sexual content. Shounen ai is used to describe male/male pairings without any sexual content.

And does your mysterious and illegal site you were mentioning starts with letter F? If so, it recently removed all of the downloads and went legid.

As I said I'm not much into it, but it was my understanding that the world "yaoi" came from a Japanese shortening of "no plot, no... something and no something else either". I could probably google it but I don't feel like it. It's the reason I avoid that tag as much as I possibly can. If it's like you say, I guess I should be less wary of it.

Otherwise, yeah "shonen ai" could be a term to search for (like "BxB" which is used on Lemmasoft forums) but it looks like it's mostly teen stories as I guess it's the age of most VN players. I'll play two or three to see but still on the lookout for adult/mature content (not in explicitness but in story, like the movie "Closer").
