Breja: I think you're asking about Loom.

Sarisio: Loom doesn't have spell preparation. Moreover, it doesn't limit you from casting any spell. Knowing it means ability to cast it infinite times..
Yes. So? The OP asked about a game that would
1. Allow the player to use magic. (Having magic exist isn't good enough; it needs to be available to the player.)
2. Must be non-violent. Most games with magic involve fighting monsters as a core part of the gameplay. I am interested in games that don't have that.

Nothing about "preparation" or "limits" here.

Legend of Kyrandia

Save for the first and only fight with Macolm, you only use magic to heal ypurself and others as well as solve certain puzzles in a non violent way.

Total non violent use of magic in a game? Can't think of one off the top. I like the idea though, it's full of potential.

Point 1. Vancian. Loom has nothing close to it.
There was an adventure game series called Spellcasting (Spellcasting 101: Sorcerers Get All the Girls; Spellcasting 201: The Sorcerer's Appliance; Spellcasting 301: Spring Break) which have a theme similar to what you want. It's somewhat crude, though - imagine Leisure Suit Larry at Hogwarts Uni and you get the idea. There's an LP of it on advgamer. blogspot. com if you want to see what it's like.

Following what ScotchMonkey says, Legend of Kyrandia 2 (for more focus on alchemy). And honestly, if you ask me, better than 1.
And as Breja said, LOOM!

There should be more magic-based adventure games!
There is this freeware game: Warthogs. Haven't tried it myself, but it seems to be school-based.

That's about his high school idea thing. Not about the general "non violent games with magic" he was asking about.
A game called CodeSpells just released on steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/324190/). Looks completely non violent and a way to learn a little bit of easy coding along the way.

It is a complete sandbox so no story element.

dtgreene: The other night, I happened to come up with an unusual game idea (that I likely will never make): essentially, a high school simulator, except that you can use magic. This idea got me wondering whether there are any other nonviolent games that incorporate magic.

In particular, I am here looking for games that:
1. Allow the player to use magic. (Having magic exist isn't good enough; it needs to be available to the player.)
2. Must be non-violent. Most games with magic involve fighting monsters as a core part of the gameplay. I am interested in games that don't have that.
I am not sure, if this is, what you're looking for, but...how about Keepsake?

http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/keepsake

1.) It's set in a "School of Magic", but I can't say, if the (female) protagonist can use it by herself.
2.) Being a Point and Click - I guess, it's (mostly) non-violent.
In Legend of Kyrandia series you use magic to do various stuff. Most notably the second game where you have to make do with some funky spells because your spellbook has most of the pages torn out.
Then there's Zork: Grand inquisitor. You use magic usually for solving puzzles and for lulz.
Pacifist modded Skyrim?

Legendary titles mentioned in the thread are already here, but this one still has a very slim chance of coming if current number of wishlist votes means anything. Heard about it years back, looks promising though.
Hmmm... The Book of unwritten tales, the gnome character is trying to become a wizard and does manage to do some magic that's non-violent... (Of course point&click are inherently non-violent... although a two headed ogre does get an eye poked...)

Think so? Play Edna & Harvey: Harvey's new eyes. You accumulate quite the body count as you solve the innocent looking puzzles, and in pretty messed up ways too. It's a superbly offbeat and darkly funny game.

Well my GF who beat Unwritten tales, there is no real violence. 'At worst they get bonked on the head'. So...
So let me get this right. You want to play a high school simulator where frail, oppressed nerds have to fight back against bullies using magic, only without violence... AND no monster killing.

Possibly the worst idea in the history of history. I can't imagine a more torturous hell to live through. But I'm sure some privately funded media division will fund one and all girl/gay/unicorn gamers will rejoice.

And then everyone will realize what a shit game it is and no one will buy it, despite the fact that the industry will literally shower the game in honors and prizes.
