If you are a console gamer:

Shadow Tower series (PS1 & PS2) - there is a translation patch for Shadow Tower - Abyss (PS2)
Eternal Ring (PS2)
Enclave (original Xbox)
King's Field series (PS1 & PS2)

some fan-made games are freely available for PC on www.swordofmoonlight.com/games
The same devs of Arx Fatalis also created the new Prey game. Has absolutely nothing to do with the original unfortunately, but it is a great modern version of System Shock 2 which others have pointed out is basically a sci-fi Ultima Underworld. Arx Fatalis was originally created to actually BE Ultima Underworld 3 but it didn't work out. The king in Arx Fatalis should seem very familiar to anyone who has played the Ultima series.

I'd basically recommend anything that falls under the genre of 'immersive sim'. Unfortunately there are very few games that fall under that category, but the games that do fit are often considered "good" to "one of the best games ever!".

-System Shock I & II.
-Prey.
-Deus Ex series.
-Thief series.
-Ultima Underworld I & II.
-Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
-Strife (old Doom engine RPG/FPS hybrid. Might scratch both itches)
-Alpha Protocol. (the main character kinda sucks but highly reactive to player choice)
-Dark Souls series. (Highly inspired by old school dungeon crawlers like Ultima)
Ultima Underworld is the spiritual ancestor of Arx so definetely that.

Jinxtah: I just finished Arx Fatalis, and I find myself genuinely sad it's over, and I want more. I loved the concept, art, story, setting, everything.

The closest I can think of would be Morrowind, which while superb, is quite different, so I'm hoping someone here can give me some pointers to a game or two that is similar to Arx?
avatar
AFnord: That's going to depend a bit on what you're after. You listed Morrowind as a similar-ish game, so I take it that what you're mainly after are first person CRPGs with free movement and slightly actiony combat, rather than strictly dungeon crawlers? Bela555 & doady gave you suggestions that are quite close to Arx Fatalis.

Lands of Lore 2 & 3 might also be worth taking a look at.
Bard's Tale IV, obviously fits the description, but it's dungeon crawler.
just fyi the original post is from early 2017

Didn't even notice.

In my eternal quest to find immersive dungeon crawlers, that most elusive of game genre that so few seem to care about CRY, here are four incredible Doom mods that provide experiences very similar that I would highly recommend:

First, the Abysm series:

Abysm 1 and 2 are "action RPG" total conversions for the Doom engine, produced by Jazzmaster. They play in a similar style to King's Field, with health bars for all the enemies, various items to pick up to boost the player or use in the environment, and - in Abysm 2 - a full leveling and attribute system is implemented. The maps are non-linear, you play in a fully connected world with a variety of places to visit.

Abysm: Dawn Of Innocence

Abysm 2: Infernal Contract

Second, the Inquisitor / Ascension series:

Inquisitor 3D: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=54380

Ascension: https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=63102

Created by ShadowMan and BigMemka, these are both first person action RPG experiences. Compared to Abysm, they are more quest and stat focused with interconnected maps making for a sizeable world that can be played through in a non-linear fashion, a diverse range of weaponry, NPCs, tons of enemies, power ups, magic, the whole thing. What Hexen should have been. What King's Field would kinda be in the GZDoom engine, I guess.

For a quick look, pagb666 has done play throughs of both mods here:

I honestly don't think there is anything out there with the same vibe.

mrcrispy83: King's Field/Shadow Tower series, though they're probably a lot simpler.
I second these. Especially Kings Field IV since it came out around the same time.

Jinxtah: I did try Dishonored, and I really didn't like it. Oh sure it starts off strong, but before long you're so infused with powers that you blink across maps and nothing poses a challenge anymore. It goes from being a stealth game to being a ... I'm not sure how to describe it, but they went too far with the powers I felt like. Enemies spot you? Np, juts blink away a couple of times within the span of a second and you're safe. Then come back and activate your insane powers and everyone is dead without you having to engage your brain. I think it would definitely be a great game if it wasn't for those overpowered skills though. I did get quite far into it, before I just couldn't take it anymore.
About Dishonored - if you didn't want superpowers (like Blink), why did you take them when the Outsider offers you the chance to either take them or don't take them at the start of the game?

To get the purest stealth walk-through, you'd probably have to go "no powers."

Fantastic list right there, if you ask me.

I obviously didn't know it would become that boringly easy with all those powers.

I've since replayed it without powers and liked it just fine.
Someone made a standalone mod on the doom 3 engine based on Arx. I think it was called End of Sun.

Nice, I must have missed that one:

Monomyth is an upcoming game that is basically Arx Fatalis / Ultima Underworld with modern graphics: https://store.steampowered.com/app/908360/Monomyth/

It is currently on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/836367155/monomyth/ ) and a playable demo is on Steam.
