Don't see it that way. Maybe people prefer one of the games a lot more over the others, and decide to mention that one.
If you allowed for a second pick, I think they would be mentioned.

Now, to correct my oversight, I cannot truly pick just one game. When I am asked about my favourite game, I try to select one that matches well with the discussion and the people in the conversation — and that is why you may see me mentioning different games.

This time I may go with the original Civilizations game. I played a "non-official" copy of it, I had to figure everything on my own (it wasn't easy), but it was great!
I learned quite a lot from it. Not on history itself, but it made me think about the impact of so many innovations on ancient (and not so ancient) civilizations. Roads were not always there when they were needed, the effects of religion on the population, and the effects of a war that dragged on and on...

Today I can still spend and entire weekend playing Freeciv.

I am speechless! I only played a remake of the second HMM on my cell phone, and it is great fun! It is not Master of Magic, but very good on its own.

Interesting. I tried playing Freeciv a month ago but couldn't get in to cause of not very transparent way how units get to move or which units are chosen from the start. Im still hoping though that gog will get 2K on board and we might get Ultimate Civilization 2 Classic Collection. For me personally Civ 2 was the best civilization game ever made. Very easy to get in to and it had countless scenarios + multiplayer for those who wanted that.

The server/client split of the game is a bit confusing for those who prefer to avoid complexity, and just want to play it in single-player mode. Today is much simpler than it was when I started to play it, so I had to learn to deal with it.

I would love to play it with friends, LAN-party style (as I would be crushed on the Internet).

I never played Civ 2, but I think it would have little to offer over Freeciv today.
You may also wan to try The Battle for Wesnoth, also available for free (and a permissive license). With these two games, I rarely get bored.

It works with WINE too afaik and makes Heroes 3 with all the addons playable in up to 4000x4000 pixels, I've seen mad screen setups for this, the best one was 3x3 screens combined a few years ago long before the inferior official HD version without addons was sold for way too much money. You barely have to scroll at all and can see most of the map at the same time.
The menus have been tweaked a bit too, but you only notice the improvements in direct comparison (some are shown on the site).

I agree, Freeciv is a still a bit unpolished and Civilisation 2 is the best one in the series, I still got it boxed in mint condition. :)

Have you tried "The Battle for Wesnoth" yet? I see Gede mentioned it too.
It's pretty well known by Linux users, because it's a well polished and nice looking huge Open Source project that got translated in most languages available (even Latin!) and is in most repositories. It's really good, you can feel the love many people have put into it.

No, I haven't yet tried Battle for Wesnoth but I might give it a go and see how it is. Its basically Warlords 2 clone but a good one I must say.
