The DRM-Free Revolution Continues with Big Pre-Orders and Launch Day Releases!

Good news! GOG.com is going to bring you more fantastic launch day releases, preorders, and other exciting new content from some of our favorite developers. We've lined up 3 big titles that we will be bringing to GOG.com in the next couple of months for sale or preorder that we think will be hits with all of our gamers; and we have more equally exciting games coming up soon.

If you've been a member of the site for a long time, you may recall that when we launched sales of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com, we had to add in regional pricing. The game cost different amounts in in the US, the UK, the European Union, and Australia. We're doing something like that once again in order to bring you new titles from fantastic bigger studios. Since we don't accept currencies other than USD on GOG.com right now, we'll be charging the equivalent of the local price in USD for these titles. We wish that we could offer these games at flat prices everywhere in the world, but the decision on pricing is always in our partners' hands, and regional pricing is becoming the standard around the globe. We're doing this because we believe that there's no better way to accomplish our overall goals for DRM-Free gaming and GOG.com. We need more games, devs, and publishers on board to make DRM-Free gaming something that's standard for all of the gaming world!

That brings with it more good news, though! As mentioned, we have three games we're launching soon with regional pricing--two RPGs and a strategy game--and while we can't tell you what they are yet because breaking an NDA has more severe penalties than just getting a noogie, we're confident that you'll be as excited about these games as we are. For a limited time, we will be offering anyone who pre-orders or buys one of them a free game from a selection as a gift from GOG.com, just like we did for The Witcher 2.

If you have any questions, hit us up in the comments below and we'll be happy to answer (to the best of our ability).

EDIT: Since we've answered a lot of the common questions already here (and lest you think that we've ignored you), it may be handy for you to check out the forum thread about this and search for staff answers by clicking this link here. (hat tip to user Eli who reminded us that the feature even exists. :)

TheEnigmaticT: We do, actually, have some games that I'm pretty sure will have people giddy with glee once they show up on GOG that will be available thanks to this change. But for the most part we're probably best off awaiting TheFrenchMonk's letter to you guys that's to be published tomorrow.

CarrionCrow: Come on now. You need to get ahold of a word processing program and a Casio keyboard. No manual or soundtrack present? Make them yourself! You're not trying hard enough! ;)
avatar
JudasIscariot: I am already scanning manuals but making them is a wee bit beyond me. After all, I wasn't hired for my lack of Photoshopping/manual making/musical talents :)
Excuses, excuses. I thought having a magic wand came standard with GOG employment.

Edit - On a serious note, it is definitely appreciated that staff has been taking the time to address the current state of affairs. Pretty sure a number of companies would have began and ended the conversation with "IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, TOUGH SHIT".

JudasIscariot: Excuse me for barging into TET's area here but as one of the folks responsible for ensuring the games have the most amount of goodies I feel I should clarify this: there are times when a game has a) nothing but the manual even in the original release b) in the case of indie games, we do what we can with what we get and c) sometimes the extras don't approved because of legal issues on the extras themselves.

I know I am being a wee bit defensive here as I, as well as my colleagues, take my job seriously.

Thanks for reading :)

edited for clarity :)
Ah, no worries Judas, no one thinks that you take the goodies and keep them to yourself - at least not yet. :-P

tfishell: Pretty sure "Amerifag" and "Eurofag" are just internet slang. Not tasteful, but certainly not the same as saying, "I'm scared of homosexuals."

Also, wasn't rrr8891 being sarcastic? Or were there other posts by him I missed?

spindown: Not in this thread, but he has a history of posting words like "fag" and "nigger" for no reason other than to provoke.
Ah, I see.
This thread, and the forum in general, needs a way to show only blue posts. I feel that a lot of questions have already been answered/evaded but people keep asking them again and again because they haven't see the earlier blue posts.

hedwards: I doubt very much that TET likes being in this sort of situation with having to prop this up with PR bullshit. I can't personally believe that he believes half of what he's been saying in this thread.
Yeah, I really don't envy TET's job at the moment. Having to defend a bullshit decision you probably haven't even had a say in must suck.

unknown78: Do you realy think thats good for the brand GOG? Is it what you love about GOG giving up on their principles?

As hard as it sometimes is.. i don't buy new EA Products cause EA have forgotten their customers. I don't buy new UBISoft Products cause the same. I buy on steam cause ... sadly GOG never heard my linux crying.

So i stand by my words .. Never drop principles which made your brand strong , stay true to yourself. Better loose some sales before you loose customers cause they don't trust you anymore.
I totally agree. I have not bought any game from €A since those debacles with ME3 and especially since they introduced Origin... although I have to say that those were only the last straws to break the gamers back. €A gives a crap about customers, about selling properly working games or about releasing patches. They let the customers jump through hoops, while delivering a simply abysmal service. I mean, demanding from your customers that they have to speak english in order to use the online support and then employ techs which are not able to speak one coherent sentence in english and simply cancel the conversation every now and then is truly a special sign of appreciation.

Ubisoft? Neee, I stopped buying their games when they introduced their "always online" policy. I know they stepped back from it sometime ago, but ruined trust is ruined trust.

Steam? I am a customer for 10 years now and nowadays I only use it when games, retail or downloaded, come with a Steam key. They never had the best policy when it comes to communication with their customers, but over the last years Steam turned into a machine optimized to shovel in money, with no respect whatsoever for reasonable requests and with no respect for customer loyalty. In fact Valve begun to treat long time customers with contempt, for the sake of those people who join every hype and spend hard cash for virtual cards and other crap.

Each one of them begun as a once decent publisher. And each one of them started at some point to take a little more money here, brake a little promise there... until suddenly they were the abominations they are now. I get it, we are only talking about 3 games here, but in my nasty experience this is how things start... with breaking promises and violating the own standards. I am not saying that GOG is going this way, but I am almost 40 now and in my gaming career I got screwed over by the content industry so often that it is hard not to be suspicious when something like this happens.

I really believe that in the long run it would have been way better for GOG not to take this deal and keep the trust of their customers.

Draugr: The point with all this rage is that people are just not willing to sacrifice what makes gog so great and unique just for "some great games". I can get great games at Steam. But I can't get them DRM free with a one world price and censorship free state. If gog removes too much of this (I certainly hope we'll never reach that state) I just lose my reason to buy here. :/

I mean Steam already managed to add Linux support, while I have to fiddle around manually with wine and doxbox to get my gog games running there. Until now I always wished that gog takes that step at some point and removes my reason to buy at Steam.
Just get an old copy of win 7 or xP and dual boot.
you will save yourself alot of pain.
With that said, its great there are more and more games out for linux.
Er, woops, was a page behind. Nvm.

If the end result will be the same, I see little practical difference between "if you don't like it, tough shit" and "if you don't like it, here are a couple of our employees that we're giving one hell of a shit job of persuading you otherwise. if they fail, then tough shit."

trusteft: I would love to know who the fuck earns 22K in Greece.
The min legal salary per month is a bit over 500, with actual figures going 150+ down of that.
Even on the hayday most people who had some good experience didn't win much over 1000, talking about after decades of experience.
For many years I see in official papers claims of 22K+ as GDP per capita but for the life of me I have no idea how they come to that number. Perhaps the top 1% wins so much more that it raises the average, but 22K? lol
At £1 - $1.67 - €1.75
Average salary in Britain
£26,500 = $44,159.60 = €32,151.15
My wage including my overtime (8+ a week) last year
£14,525.88 = $24205.93 = €17623.54

In reality most people never come close to the "average" wage as it is often all the wages added together and then divided by the number of people included.

Lets say : Number of books people read - 100 + 8 + 16 + 5 + 2 = 131
131 / 26.2 = average number of books 26.2
This is a disproportionate way of doing things, but it always make the numbers look good

EDIT:::
1 - found my P60 so I actually have my real wage.
2 - a better way of seeing how our prices match is to look at necessary groceries
milk 4pint - £1.39
bread - £1.35 (Kingsmill 50/50)
2 ltr cola - £1.98

The only magic wand I got comes in Photoshop and I barely manage to use it effectively :P

HGiles: I haven't seen any games proposed that would make this move worth it. GOG should have waited until they had some top requests on the wishlist in the bag before going forward with this.

Without going into specifics, can you confirm that GOG do have some highly-requested classics in the works?
