Syphon72: Running the game in Windows, worked for me. Once I took the game out of Windows, the option settings were still applied.
Or one can just set everything manually in config.lua.

-----SEE EDIT-----
I too used to be able to get into the options back when I was on a 5 year old version of Windows 10. Tried after the update and the options do crash.

But the game is still fully playable otherwise. Just don't force it into anything but a 4:3 resolution, or you're asking for trouble.

EDIT:
Sorry, it was not Windows issue. I also have the game on disc (Spellforce Complete Collection) and I played the game from that, not the GOG version. The options open normally in the disc version (see screen). Been a while since I played, so I forgot which install I played (have both installed).
In the GOG version (both the DVD and GOG versions are on the same patch, 1.54.75000), the options crash. The versions are mostly identical, because I can even load the same save games in both. No idea what the difference that causes the crash is.

Actually, the Windows update solved an issue for me in the disc version - I can quit the game normally from the menu now. Used to have to do it through task manager because I'd get a permanent black screen otherwise.

Yet again, physical version is superior to the digital :O

Thank you for the info about Spellforce too. Impressive physical collection though!

Syphon72: Well I stand corrected. The game is crashing in the option menu now. Not lying, I did not have this issue last year when playing.

Anyway, don't listen to me CarChris. The game is not really playable anymore, unless you want to mess around with it little.

CarChris: Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I have only the base game (Spellforce) on retail (CD), so I wanted the GOG version, which has the expansions too. Not until it is fixed, it seems...
Just in case it's of relevance to you, the game is completely DRM-free and client-free on steam, too.

I can confirm this as well.
