Thanks to each and every one of you who replied - a fine example of why I'm impressed so by GOG and it's community. I definitely need to be more selective with my purchases because I struggle to free up enough time to play any games! It took me two days to find enough time to come back here and thank you all!

Every answer was a good one and I've taken it all in. I must say that I'm pretty scared at the prospect of an insomnia sale!!! :)
Unless you want to get new releases, really want to play a specific game right now, there's hardly any reason not to wait until your wishlisted games are discounted. There's always a sale on GOG. Apart from the big ones that span a few weeks and happen 2-3 times per year, there are regular weekly ones:

- Weekend Sale (Friday through Monday): focusing on a single publisher or genre or particular theme;
- Weekly Staff Pick (Monday through Thursday): another themed sale
- Gem Promos (Wednesday): highlighting a single game, usually a slightly less popular ones; I haven't seen it in a while, though

Plus random promos that may crop up. If you're active in giveaway threads, there's a good chance you'll get a free game from a generous GOG member. New releases, particularly indie ones, rarely go on promo in the first few months after release, except maybe a small 10% discount. But if you're not very particular about what you want to play, pick something you like best from the current promo, play it, then choose something from another promo when you get a craving for something else.

The gem promos have basically been rolled into the weekly staff picks. That's why they're not around anymore.
I don't do managing because it makes things too serious. I would rather play Dragon Age again for the pleasure of it than start a new game just to get closer to finishing every game I own. Don't buy more than you can afford.

I will begin regulating my drinking if it becomes a problem. Same with games. The end.
