I usually go to 3 places:
- User review section in the GOG website
- Game-specific forums on the GOG website (they have a subforum for each game)
- The Steam forums for the game (you do have to create an account to view certain games that are more graphic as they will be hidden from the store otherwise)

Thanks for the suggestions, but I've found the GOG user reviews and game-specific forums to be very hit-and-miss. Sometimes I get a reply and sometimes I don't get any. In particular, many of NSFW games have few if any reviews and posts. I have a Steam account but have never posted in their forums.

Yes, because such feedback from the GOG community is hit or miss depending on the popularity of the game here, I have to depend on the Steam forums for that info sometimes.

Whether or not you can post on the Steam forums shouldn't matter (I can't, because I never bought any games there). It is just a searchable reference (and you need an account to access that information for some of the erotic games, because they won't let you view it without an account).

You just go on their forums for the game in question, look at the first page and see if "censor" and "patch" pop up in the topics. If they don't, you can do a search. It is a source of information based on things other people who bought the game encountered (and given that they are a larger community, they are most likely to have posted the relevant info there), that's all.

PS: I also use the Steam store as a reference for the aggregated user review scores on a lot of the games I buy here. It is not a perfect reference, because the score is binary (so it takes a fairly large sample for the percentage score of "negative" and "positive" reviews to give a meaningful picture of the approximate rating of the game as a percentage) and also it doesn't talk about drm much, but it is a good starting point.

PS: If you want comprehensive game reviews, Ste*m has them in great numbers. We find them quite useful in making a purchase decision here. Hopefully that redeems us(at least partially), in terms of our morally dubious previous comment.

I watched a bit on the censorship in Japan, and there was this stand that sold adult magazines, uncensored, but he said he had to go through each and every page of every magazine and run a marker to censor genitals a bit (specifically the clitoris/urethra portion i believe) because by law he couldn't sell them otherwise.

Curiously nudity isn't considered sexual, but if there's pubic hair it is sexual... which is probably why you can have so much topless scenes in anime (though often it isn't for more than a handful of seconds) I'm not familiar with how much de-censor groups there are, though i'm sure shrinking, then bilear filtering increase resolution, sharpening, and then redrawing edges would do 90% of it. I wouldn't be surprised if a patreon group concentrates on this, but there's going to be so much they have to pick projects and work them one or two at a time.

That's not true. The important variable here aren't the devs but the publishers. Best example here is "Evenivle". The first part is published by Mangagamer which is not based in Japan and the game is completely uncemsored (and was a blast to play through). The second part however, Evenicle 2, was self published by the japanese devs Alice Soft. People complained about the mosaics and Alice Soft on their Twitter said that they are trying to find a solution but they also stated that it is complicated since they are a japanese company ... unfortunately they never did find the solution which is the reason that I have not even started the game even though I really liked the first one. I am quite sure that those mosaics will make the game less enjoyable. Ever heard of the word "self censored"? The game was never INTENDED to have those mosaics - if it would these parts of the pics would not just be mosaiced but never drawn at all.

If you don't know the difference between a game with erotic/sexual content and some direct porn vids I would say that you don't even know what you are talking about. Maybe if you don't like these kind of games (or don't understand their appeal and the reason that they are on GOG as well as on Steam) you should not post at all in such threads . Ok, publishers, not devs, where the line these days vanishes with all the indies. And it's also about public hair. Point is that it's to be sold on the Japanese market they have to follow certain regulations, that are different from here.
So yes, it's to be expected that they follow these regulations. And our versions can of course be be additionally censored.
But if they are original and no version without mosaic exists ... then they are not censored, "self censored" ... maybe, but that's not forced. It's a matter of interpretation and we both obviously have a different one. What's true and what not is always depending on the point of view (other than facts. The fact is, that there is a mosaic, your interpretation - also known as 'truth' - from it says that this is censored).

My personal definition: games/movies without blood in any version are not censored. Game where the blood exists in a different version and was cut out or removed, are censored.
Same goes for Schniedelwutz-depictions.

Well Evenicle 1 is the better game overall and not because the mosaics were removed, it's quite the adventure, had some laughs, there are also some grim situations in the game and sad ones. But yeah if they publish outside of japan in a company that isn't in japan sure they can use it without mosaics, though that does not guarantee they will do that.
But otherwise they have to follow the law in Japan.
Evenicle 2 i haven't played yet or even gotten it but am at Evenicle 1 chapter 6 now.
Most people preferred Evenicle 1 over 2 who played it, but this could vary on what people like about the game. Don't think Evenicle 2 has such grim stories in it and is more vanilla i think.
Also just because the mosaics exist which i do agree it would probably be better if they didn't it's more about the game and how it plays and the world. The H-scenes are more of a bonus to the game, but yeah it is a part how the main character connects to the wifes and other things.
The thing i don't know about Evenicle 1 is if it was properly translated.
Don't think Evenicle 2 has that problem since i doubt the translation was changed from a japanese company.
Don't let mosaics bother you too much in enjoying the game.

I am trying. I enjoyed Evenicle 1 extremely and not just because of the H-scenes. As you pointed out it simply is a great game with a great and thought provoking story including several twists, humour and drama as well. If it were only about the H-scenes I probably would never have purchased the second one but I was curious how they would continue the story and if it will be as much fun. I cannot even say if the mosaics would destroy the gaming experience for me but I simply assume that they will lessen the experience. At least in the first one the H-scenes fit perfectly to the theme of the game and they were even necessary to make the story work which is extremely rare but if you played it you understand why that is the case. So while I will play the second one some time - even with the mosaics - I was simply hoping that they might be removed before I start this second journey.
