The Outer Limits was a very X-Files like TV series. The original 2 series ran from 1963-1965, however the show was revived for 7 series in 1995-2001 so that matches the time period. A lot of other mentioned stuff like Fringe (2008), Warehouse 13 (2009), etc, came a decade later.

Canceled back in 2014, though it wasn't abruptly so it managed to properly conclude.

I'm surprised no one mentionted Utopia yet. It's better than any sci fi because it's sci fi that's REAL. Do yourselves a FAVOUR and WATCH it people!

The first thing that came to mind is Friday the 13th: The Series (1987-1990) as some others have mentioned, but since you ruled that out do you think it could have possibly been Relic Hunter (1999-2002)? I vaguely remember the characters working at a university and I'm pretty sure it featured supernatural events.

I mean, I don't want to hijack the thread into yet another nostalgia-focused jaunt down television's memory lane but if we're gonna go with the "WHY HAS NO ONE SAID x" stuff, then let us not forget things like Eureka or Sanctuary, to name but two in quite a lengthy list.

TheMonkofDestiny: The Lone Gunmen lasted a season on its own and the title characters got a tearful sendoff in a late season X-Files episode (not to discount the reappearance of one in the later restarted seasons). The focus of the show was less on the paranormal and more on the conspiracy theory end of things. It had its stinkers as far as episodes go but in general was better than a significant chunk of certain late seasons of the X-Files combined.
The pilot episode was really good, but other than that the show leaned way, waaay to much into comedy. It was a damn waste of potential, because the couple of Lone Gunmen focused episodes of the X-Files, especially Unusual Suspects, were really great.

Anyway, there's plenty of X-Files-ish shows out there, both made before and after (obviously the latter cathegory is broader) but I can't think of nothing that would quite fit the description.

Eerie Indiana is about two kids not teachers, and has no female lead.
The Infinite Worlds of H. G. Wells definately doesn't fit the episodes described :P
Kolchak the Night Stalker has no female lead and is very clearly not a 90s show.
The Middleman is definately more sci-fi than paranormal, and none of the episodes fit.
Shadow Chasers has no female lead and is from the 80s

I don't know... how about Baywatch Nights? Yeah, the spin off with Hasselhoff playing detective. I never watched any of it, but supposedly in the second season they went full X-Files and had lots of paranormal cases.

Like X-Files it had male and female lead, except I think they were college teachers or something and studied various supernatural and mystical incidents. So the series was purely about supernatural/magic, no aliens.

I more distictly remember 3 episodes:
1. Some guy from the gang kicks ass with top level kung fu, but those skills come from some ninja ghost. And this ghost kills everyone, whom this guy defeated the next day.
2. Some folks play Dungeons&Dragons, but the game becomes real - if you die in the game you die for real.
3. Some painting makes people go mad, so they see monsters everywhere instead of people.

Probably because most people don't understand or respect the difference between sci-fi and fantasy. Great to see that you've found the answer.

There's so many great shows in this thread that I had completely forgotten about.
