I find that Jeff Vogel makes some of the best rpgs I have ever laid eyes on. Every tuesday and thursday I wait in anticipation to see when he will release some Avernum or Avadon games on here as I like them a lot.

I am more into his newer released games that have the new system (avadon and avernum escape from the pit). Does anyone think he will eventually release the gene forge games in that system? I think the games are good but the new stat system for the 2 newer games is just plain excellent. With that new system, Geneforge would be so awesome.

How is the system?

I have yet to play an Avadon/Avernum game, and would love to see them here if the Geneforge series is any indication.

I would take part in the November 50% sale if I had a guarantee that I could get it on GOG... [when/if they come here]

Avernum Escape from the Pit is an excellent game. It has a lot of the gene forge 1 and 2 in it as it is very nonlinear. You can do anything you want without the game stopping you and the storyline is what you do with the game. Im currently beating it for a 2nd time as its really a great game.

Avadon on the other hand, well...its a good game, but can be frustrating if you are like me. Its got a lot of gene forge 3 and 4 in it as it is very linear but..its got a great story.
Avadon is not like Avernum and Geneforge at all when it comes to combat. Everything is ranged weapons favored and melee just isn't very powerful. You will find that unlike Geneforge and Avernum where melee is king, Avadon has the archers and mages/priests act as cannons while melee protects the weak.

Their both great games, but I prefer Avernum.
I would liek to see the geneforge games re-released, but I am skeptical if the thigns I would like to see updated/changed would be the things Jeff thinks should be updated/changed. recently he seems to have taken a liking toskill trees, which IMO worked horribly in Avadon and are really something I would not like to see in geneforge. Somehow I don't see him fixing problems in the games such as G3's linearity in plot and exploration, or making it possible for Shaper characters to get the trakovite ending in G4, or putting some sort of resolution to the amnesia plot in G5. This doesn't seem to be the sort of thing he has on his lsit of priorities updating avernum, so I wouldn't expect to see it in geneforge, he seems more focused on game mechanics and graphics. That being said, I would love to be able to equip Greta and Alwan with equipment like I was able to do with my party in Avadon.

Thats true, Avadon does have an annoying curve with the skill tree but I thought that Avernum's skill tree was done fairly well in the rerelease. I know it wasn't perfect but it was a heck of a lot of fun. I find that avadons tree is better with taking the right column and using the utility skills with some dexterity and your main attack skill (intelligence or dexterity) . I had to retrain most of my chars but it was still a lot of fun. I think that avadon is better not to take the left column totally as it is not as useful unless you really know what you are doing.

Jeff did say he was going to give more skill points in the Avadon sequel, i think 3 points instead of 2.
