I bought the Steam version not too long ago, and it made me register the game with Stardock before I could play (along with all of their other games on Steam), which is pretty low of them. Is the same registration requirement here as well?
Can't say 100%, but I'd go with "yes it is" otherwise this would be the first drm-damned game in gog.
Going to buy this one soon, damn gog for making such interesting games available!

The reason I suspect it may not be is that this type of DRM (mandatory account registration) was one of the last questions on the GOG survey that was sent out a few weeks back - asking whether GOG members would be ok with games that carry that requirement. I'm worried now that enough people responded "yes" to that question that now CDP is starting to release such games.

No, you don't need to register anywhere to play our version of the game.

When did you buy it on Steam? Until recently, Stardock provided stand-alone installers for their games, no matter where you bought them. This is the reason for the registration. Now, Stardock only provides Steam-keys for new purchases, which should make the registration no longer necessary, if you buy one on Steam. However, I don't use Steam, so I can't verify this.

And for the record, the Stardock-installer for GalCiv 1 is entirely DRM-Free.

Thank you. That's a relief.

I have four of Stardock's games on Steam: GalCiv I and II, Sins, and Demigod. All of them require that you register the game with Stardock before they will run. I'm assuming that is their intention, thinking that it will reduce piracy or possibly just to get your email address so they can send you ads. Or maybe it's something leftover from Impulse. I really don't know, but if all they're issuing is Steam keys, I wish they'd get rid of the redundancy already.

Why do you need to get Altarian Prophecy expansion from GameStop? Its already included in the GOG version installer when we download it.
This version of GalCiv1 is DRM-Free.

I bought it from GOG.com.
Installed GC1 on a brand new Windows 7 64-bit install.
It installed the base game and Altarian Prophecy.

Both the base game and the expansion launched and played just fine. No connection to internet needed.

For some reason we get a serial code when we buy the game but I haven't needed it.

The GameStop app might look for games it thinks belongs to it. I have Stardock games and install them from Stardock yet the GameStop app will find them and show them as installed in the GameStop app. Probably left over from when GameStop was Impulse.

I think the serial number is for the purpose of allowing us to register the game with stardock website just in case.

The serial code is required for the Metaverse, the online leader-board, on Stardock's site.
