My strong opinion is: play the original, an opinion that I believe is shared by MANY other fans. While the 20th Anniversary remake certainly has better graphics and music, it is far inferior in terms of gameplay. Basically, (my understanding is) Jane and Robert tried to make the remake on a shoestring budget, using money they raised on Kickstarter for an independent game Moebius and both games sucked in terms of gameplay (a lesson they appear to have learned and have stated quite clearly that any future games will have to be funded by a major publisher.)
With the original, you get a wide variety of icons to use as you please (indeed, the most plentiful icon bar in any Sierra point-and-click adventure). In the remake, clicking on an object brings up a very short list of multiple choice icons and that is it. Your flexibility of how to proceed through the game is also severely curtailed in the remake, as the remake was designed with the assumption is each day would have be released episodically. The remake adds a handful of extra puzzles, but these are far from inspired design, being extremely easy and not very interesting.
Further, the graphics in Sierra's original are actually very high quality, being (IMO) excellent SVGA art. The original's music is probably some of Robert's best work.
So, do yourself a favor and save your money on the remake. Play the original.
