Right after the introduction picture to Chapter 1, Day 1, I get the following error message:

"Windows has stopped working." Then, CRASH! Gone. I have Windows 8, IntelHD laptop.

What's the problem here, and how do I correct this?

Try going to the support and drivers section on http://www.intel.com and grabbing the latest drivers for your operating system and video card - probably the Intel HD 4000. The drivers I just grabbed are dated May 2013 and resolved the same crash for me that you're describing.

To get rid of the flicker, turn off incremental rendering and that should take care of it.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me! I do have the Intel HD 4000, and after running the driver update automatic check, I get this message:

Product Detected Intel® HD Graphics 4000
Current Driver Installed 9.17.10.2857
A customized computer manufacturer driver is installed on your computer. The Intel Driver Update Utility is not able to update the driver. Installing a generic Intel driver instead of the customized computer manufacturer driver may cause technical issues. Contact your computer manufacturer for the latest driver for your computer.

What should I do? Should I go ahead and download it anyway?

P.S.

I went to the HP website and saw two drivers, the one I have above and this one: 2012-11-16 , Version:9.18.13.614, 291.99M
Both of these drivers were released on the same day, but this new one has a higher number value. Does that mean that it's newer and that I should install it? I'm not sure.

I would try the driver from the Intel website. If it causes problems, just roll back to the HP specific Intel driver.

Well, it worked. I downloaded the latest drivers, which were March 2013 (I didn't see any May drivers). The game progressed past the chapter 1 screen, finallllly. However, I encountered another problem: certain objects weren't showing up (like the masking tape in the wardrobe). I changed the Lighting settings from High to Medium, and then the tape magically appeared.

All appears to be functioning well, but man these graphics are awful haha. Thanks for your help!
