So, I'm at the point where I need to get into the hunting lodge with a copy of the family papers, and I've talked to the lawyer and the only response he gives me is that it would take a while. I've looked up walk-throughs to try to get past this, and they all say that I need to go to the police station and trigger that cut-scene where the cop brushes me off. The problem is the police station was the first place I went to after leaving the farm and now I'm stuck at the lawyer. Anyone else get the same problem?

Not sure, but could it be that you're in chapter 1 and want to go on to the hunting club (not hunting lodge)?

You have to complete everything else in Chapter 1 before you get the papers from the lawyer. Some things that come to my mind:

- Getting the fur and the print at the farm
- Writing a letter to Grace and posting it
- Talk to dr. Klingmann, get to the wolves and obtain fur from them
- Getting everything to the university lab

I did all those things; I mailed the letter, got the university lab report, found the hunting club, talked to the receptionist asking for the family tree, met lawyer, told to wait, etc. When I try to go back to the university or the police station the game tells me there's nothing more to do there. I think I'm just in an unwinnable state.

Maybe you're missing something, but that's very hard to say from here. If you're really stuck in a deadlock, it's a waste of time to search for the solution anyway. As you're still in chapter 1, I'd take the walkthrough I posted above and start over. It takes 20 minutes to get back to where you're now and I'm sure it'll work and solve your problem, if you keep close to what's written.
