Just installed GK2 and literally the first thing I tried to do is causing the game to glitch out.

Steps to reproduce:
* Click on the bag by the china cabinet
* Click on the dagger in the bag

No cutscene plays; the main area of the screen goes blank and the mouse cursor disappears. I can click around at random and sometimes Gabriel will say something as though I have clicked on a hotspot in the room, but I can't see the room or the mouse. I can't even quit the game because I can't see the cursor to open the system menu!

I can't find anyone else talking about this but I haven't found any way to keep it from happening. Tried running on Scummvm 2.5.0 and on a different computer with the same result. What on earth is going on?

Testing on Windows 10 Pro x64, with ScummVM 2.5.0 and the more recent 2.5.1, I don't get this issue. I see a cutscene playing with Gabriel taking the items from his bag, after clicking on the dagger.

I've tested with an installation of the game where I had the subtitles patch installed, and also with a fresh GOG installation without the subtitles patch. Both installations were done from the latest offline GOG installer (ie. I haven't tested installing from GOG Galaxy). I don't know if it matters, but I quickly tested, so I started a new game, skipped the intro cutscenes and clicked on the bag first thing after the gameplay proper started.
Edit: I have now tested running the game from its GOG shortcut, which is using the (old) ScummVM 2.0.0 that GOG bundles with the game. I don't get the black screen issue with that one either.

Possible things to try:
- A clean installation of the game from the latest GOG installer
- Start a new game (ie. don't load from an old savegame)
- Use ScummVM 2.5.1, maybe remove the game's current entry and re-add the game anew, to start with a clean configuration for the game.
- Try running the game in windowed mode to see if it makes a difference (I've tested both in full screen and windowed, though, and I still didn't get the black screen issue)
- (maybe) try verifying the installed game files integrity with GOG Galaxy if you're using that. Edit: If you have the subtitles patch installed and you verify the game files with Galaxy, it will likely undo the patch and you may have to do the process for setting it up again. Otherwise, the process may mess up the game (since the patch overwrites a few game data files and also adds a few of its own).

If the above do not work, could you share your scummvm.ini file if running the game from an external ScummVM installation --or gk.ini if you are running the game from the GOG shortcut?

Thanks for your quick and thorough investigation!

After a night's sleep and this confirmation that it _should_ work, I remembered that my computer spontaneously rebooted halfway through the initial download via GOG Galaxy - I didn't think anything of it since GOG Galaxy picked the download up right again, but that clearly corrupted something. A complete uninstall and reinstall fixed the problem.

(Though the computer rebooted halfway through the download AGAIN the second time - I cancelled it and started the install from scratch to be sure it was clean, and the third time was a charm. Worrying, but definitely not scummvm's fault and more likely an issue with my computer than a GOG Galaxy issue. Will happy provide Galaxy logs if someone wants 'em though.)

As frustrating as it was, I'm glad that if the install had to get corrupted, it broke in the first room, rather than at the very end! Sheesh.
