Played GK3 first, then 2 and now, finally finished 1... (1 and 2 were only for sale via ebay for about $100.00 a pop when 3 came out) ;)

I found it very odd that a potential and permanent ending in GK1 was Gabriel dying. (hey, I warned you about the spoilers :p ) If you don't click malia correctly (and I did click her, but must have missed the pixel) you get a final cutscene, score, and credits where Gabe dies. I'm guessing GK2 and 3 weren't expected at this point? I'm not against the main character dying, but its hard to pick up a sequel with a character that you allowed the fan base to kill off.

I had a recent save and found the pixel to see the good ending as well, but I was curious what others felt about this choice. I'm tossing it up to shortsightedness on the devs part (or did I miss something?) Any other games let you kill off the main character and then bring him back for part 2?
A few comes to mind... (SPOILERS again, beware!)

If I'm not mistaken, there's an ending in Mass Effect 2 where Shepard dies, with credits and everything. (If we have a date with Morinth.)
Also, Pandora Directive had at least three endings where Tex Murphy died yet we saw him in good health later in Overseer.
There's also a small hint when Gabriel talks to Wolfgang through the phone about the origin of the "Schattenjaeger Curse" which is not revealed until the very end of GK3, so my guess is they WERE planning on expanding the story after GK1.
There are lots of games with "Bad ending" in case you haven't noticed.

True. It's actually rather common in adventure games that if you make bad choices at the endgame you die and get ending cutscene and credits. At that poin most of the people realize at that point that they did something wrong and replay the endgame. (Although there are few games where there is no happy ending at all.) Personally I enjoy these bad endings and usually even if I managed to get happy end at my first playthrough I replay the endgame to get the bad ending. :)
Dying in Sierra games has never been a rare event. I think it can be safely assumed that the protagonist dying is never canonical.
