So, I'm playing the game fine, and every 5-10 minutes or so, the game will flash up what I'm guessing is the ScummVm debugger? and trying anything with it makes the game crash completely. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you please check which version of ScummVM GOG uses?
It's possible that these issues were already solved ages ago.

You can download the latest version of ScummVM from www.scummvm.org and try that.
If not even that helps, you can try to download the latest daily build.
