I have been trying to run Gabriel Knight 3 on windows 8, but no luck so far. The game crashes after the 'day one' intro picture.

I have contacted the support team and they said that windows 8 is not supported for this game.

I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem but was able to fix it. Any help will be much appreciated!

Regards,

Gabriel (not the Knight thought...)

Ya it won't work for me either, guess play it on someone's computer that has an older version of Windows on it when you want to play it. Sucks I know but it is an older game, maybe ResidualVM that supports 3D adventure games but mostly Grim Fandango will add GK3

My computer is running Windows 8.1 and has no problems with GK3.

Not sure about this, but the setup file I installed GK3 with had a rather new date, 2014-01-19 (and I downloaded it yesterday, so no, this is not the date of the day I downloaded it), so maybe they have just recently updated it with support for Windows 8/8.1? Mine is called "setup_gabriel_knight3_2.0.0.11.exe".
Weird... my setup file has exactly the same name as yours. I am downloading a new one, but it also has the same name.

Anyway, I will uninstall my GK3 that do not work in windows 8, install it again with the setup file downladed today, and let you know. Thank you for the replies!
No, same problem.

Even after installing it with a recent downloaded setup file, the game asks for disk one. When I solve it by replacing the GK3 file, the game crashes after the day one start screen.

Let's check for common issues:
Just to make sure all old components of DirectX9 are installed on your Windows 8 system, install this:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
Check the game and if it's not working try Compatibility Mode for Windows XP SP3 and/or running it as administrator. (Right-click the game's start icon => Properties => Compatibility)

Thank you for the tips. But I have installed the directX files and used compatibility mode as suggested, and it still not works. The only change was the crash screen (it became a green and black screen, with a windows error message, instead of only closing the game).

Do it works well for you in windows8?
Other workarounds for your issue may be:

- check if your game is installed under the Program Files folder. If so, it is highly recommended uninstalling it (and most old-ish games, for that matter), and installing it somewhere else, like "C:\GOG\GK3", for instance -- never install a game in the Program Files folder, Windows tends to impose a lot of access restrictions to whatever you install there;

- some older games, albeit cracked to run with no CD, tend to interfere with machines with no disc drive. If your computer doesn't have a disc drive (blu-ray, DVD, CD), install an emulator, like Daemon Tools or Alcohol, to create a virtual drive. If you do have a disc drive, try putting a disc in it (any disc should do the trick) and run the game, and preferably disable your virtual drive emulator;

- tinker with compatibility mode options, try different combinations -- what works for some hardware, doesn't necessarily work for a different one, so keep trying multiple combinations under compatibility mode until one makes the game stable;

If you tried every single one of these tips and still can't get the game to work properly, please, contact GOG support, explain your issue in detail to them, and make sure to send a copy of your DxDiag log.

Hope it helped, happy gaming! :)

What finally worked for me on windows 8 was to run it in compatibility mode for windows 2000/me. It always crashed when I tried to run it in any other mode. Also turned it to lower colors. Another thing I did is turn down the resolution on my monitor as low as I could get it. Even then I had some issues with the movies but towards the end of my game I happened to look in the game itself under options. There for my video card it had windows gpu instead of my actual card selected. Once I set it to my actual card in the list the movies of the last parts of the game gave me no issues. All in all it was pretty aggravating
Update: no it still doesn't work properly

I do not have the Windows 2000/ME option. The closest I can get is Windows 98/ME, but it crashes on that one as well.

Any ideas?
Now when I try to run the game it asks me to insert the disc, which I don't have because I bought and downloaded the game from this site. It's never asked me that before. Can anyone help?

Not sure if this solution helps, but it's worth a try:

Thanks! I will check out the thread.
Couple of suggestions on running GK3 on windows 8 if it flickers and freezes shortly after the Day 1 opening scene...

Try clicking the left mouse button a couple of times right when the Day 1 scene gameplay begins to keep it from freezing. If you can get it to run (with some flickering), then right-click to bring up the in-game menu, click on Advanced Options, and click OFF incremental rendering. It worked for me. Runs fine now.

If anyone has a DX11 GPU you can try my config package: http://www93.zippyshare.com/v/hZKtiAg1/file.html

This uses the dgVoodoo wrapper and it's set to 1280x720 because resolutions above will run slowly even on the fastest PC. I use this config on W10 x64 and everything works great.
