With The Basilisk (Mantis B). Final Score
The crew actually consisted of four mantises too, but they went to their grave along with the Flagship. I just wanted that thing to die, as soon and safely as possible. But hey, four other people survived!
I had never been this nervous when fighting the flagship. The biggest surprise was right at the start: that bastard looks different! Yes, the tri-laser and missile cannons were now connected to the main ship. Thus, you could never be really sure the missiles would stay offline. I can't remember if it was this way in normal mode, too. Good thing I got a Hull Repair drone right before the base beacon (man, I get lucky with these drops sometimes!), which meant I could fully heal between each stage of the fight. And sometimes during, too, heh.
Besides the flagship battle, it was very clear this wasn't no easy mode during the main game, either. As you can see from my final score table, I only managed to amass a total of 1386 scrap, which is less than half of my record (2834, gained on one of the easy mode runs, I assume). This meant that every upgrade and store purchase had to be thoroughly considered - "do I fix my ship, or do I wait and invest in another layer of shields?" And each jump, especially on sector 8, was terrifying because you never knew what sort of beast would wait for me there. Believe me, some of the ships there were even more terrifying than the (easy mode) flagship.
Anyway, I guess I'm now done with the game for a while, again. I've gotten every achievement + ship achievements, so there's nothing left to conquer anymore. It's been a hell of a journey - thank you, Subset Games.
Btw, Flak II: best weapon in the game. Get it every time you can.
